http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/1919ks/s/stottsre.html I have no magic answers, but sometimes when I'm searching I start collecting information which will hopefull put the pieces of the puzzle together. I did see this web page which leads us to believe that the State Hospital was located in Topeka, KS........which is not located in Washington Co., Kansas, but is not too far away. This does not mean that their could not have been a hospital in Washington County. If there was I wonder if it would have been located in the town of Washington. I'll keep a watchful eye for leads. I know my ancestor* had a bad bout of heat stroke with led to epilepsy. I was always told he was eventually sent to a home of epileptics. Well, this past year I finally found him in residence at a state hospital for epileptics located in Parsons, LaBette Co., KS. He died there at the young age of 44 - so sad. I believe the stories I heard were that he was helping his father-in-law** out in the fields near Haddam, Kansas. When I first heard this story I couldn't believe that heat stroke could lead to something so serious. But after discussions with my brother, who was a doctor and died at the age of 43, I learned how serious this situation could be.........so everyone drink lots of water this summer, etc. Penny *James Elias Harvey **Andrew Jackson Myers
Does anyone on the list know of an asylum in Washington County, around 1905? I have a Mary Emeline (Gardner) Boggs that was a patient there. She was declared "insane" on the 1905 Kansas census. I have Shatto ancestors from the early 1870's until the early 1890's in Sherman Township, Washington County, who I have researched quite extensively. Quite a few are buried in the Linn City Cemetery. I just ran across some entries on Ancestory.com for the US Federal Mortality Index, two of whom are Shattos reported in 1880 for Washington County: Bertie A. Shatto 1880 Washington Co., KS aged 6 M April born KS - unknown cause of death Harmon W. Shatto 1880 Washington Co., KS aged 9 M Mary born MO - died of scarlett fever I have no record of them or any mention of them from descendents; neither have I come across graves with these names. However, as my line of Shattos was the only one in Washington County at the time, they have to be kin. The problem is whose children might they be? Where can one get access to these census records? I assume they list parents and next of kin. Regards, Barry Michie - Manhattan
Please - no comments or reactions to the previous post on proposed bill HR3550. This is definitely off-topic. Thank you.
You may find yourself paying numerous taxes in the form of tolls as you travel place to place to do your research if the House transportation Bill HR3550 passes. This Bill authorizes States to turn existing Interstate and US Highways into toll roads. The Senate has already passed their version of this Bill. There is still time to contact your Representatives to voice your opposition. Rep. Mark Kennedy (R-MN) has an amendment that limits tolls to newly constructed lanes with the stipulation that the toll would end when the lane is paid for. These tolls will affect you in other ways also: consider it takes two trucks for every ingredient in your food products, 20 trucks to deliver your shirt or blouse, and over 2000 trucks to deliver your new vehicle to your dealer! These expenses will be passed on to the consumer. Call your Senators and Representatives NOW -- offices open at 9 am EST -- main switchboard number is 202-224-3121 or visit www.firstgov.gov to get contact information.
Hi, I am wondering if there is anybody out there who is willing to do a death record lookup for me. I have checked all of the genealogy volunteer sites that I know of, and did not find any volunteers for Washington county. I live in Wisconsin, and have no way of doing it myself. I am looking for the death or Charles Foth. In the 1920 census he was living in Union township, Washington county. In 1930, his widowed wife was still living there. So he died sometime between 1920 and 1930. I appreciate any help, Thank you. Bobbi

Hi List(s): I posted the query last Sunday about Rufus Berry Tansel on the TANSEL-L List and also on the KSWASHI-L List (Washington County, Kansas). I received an enormous amount of information from Jonathan Loppnow through the KSWASHI-L list. At Shelly Sloan-Hawkins suggestion, I am forwarding it to the TANSEL-L list. Since I'm outside the subject matter myself, there is not much I can do to repay the effort except to say that I have several City Directories from the Monterey County, California area from 1933 to 1964 from which I am happy to do look-ups. And I will do on the ground research in Trinity County, California. I live less than 1/2 mile from the County Court House. Thank you again Jonathan, and thank you Shelly. ......... Tansel lead. . The most likely candidate for Rufus' father is Alvarado Tansel of Haddam, Washington County, though I have no proof of that, other than that Alvarado' wife died in March of 1882 at a young age which fits with your story. Rufus by the 1930 census was born ca 1883 so it could be a match. The only probelm is that Rufus, in the 1930 census says his father was born in KY and mother MO and both Alvarado and Amanda were born in Indiana according to 1880 census, but census records are often wrong. Besides in 1920 he said father was born in MO and mother born in "US" so it could be he just didn't know. It's at least worth investigating I believe. Hello, I'm happy to announce a new Special Project, the Kansas Family Group Sheet (FGS) project. It's my privilege to be managing it, and I hope to be very busy adding family group sheets submitted by all of you. The URL for the page is http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/kansas/ . I think you'll find the page easy to read and use, but if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. The USFGS home page (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/) links to all the states. I hope you'll take advantage of this new project. Those of us who have been working to bring it to Kansas are very excited about its possibilities. Any family group that lived in Kansas, even for a short time, can be posted. THE ONLY PERSONS WHO CANNOT BE POSTED ARE THOSE WHO ARE LIVING. Each family group sheet provides space for basic information about father, mother, and children; so if you only know about one family unit, you know enough to put the information up. If you know more, you can add more family group sheets: the father's parents and siblings, the mother's parents and siblings, the children's spouses and children, and on and on. If you've traced the family into other states, you can post your group sheet in those states as well as Kansas. But just one family sheet in one state can be enough to make new and exciting connections. We've prepared the pages and forms, added search engines and links, and now it's in your hands. Send in your family group sheets. One a day, one a week, whatever works for you. Tell your fellow researchers about the site. Talk about it at your next genealogical society meeting. Mention it in your emails. The more people hear about the site, the more contributions we're likely to get; and the more contributions we receive, the more valuable the project is going to be. I'll be waiting for your family to turn up in my mailbox! Charles Barnum, KS FGS manager I started my genealogy research in Kansas about 40 years ago.
Hello List, Can someone tell me anything about St.John's Lutheran Church that was in Greenleaf abt 1887-1889? My ggrandfather, Oscar Louis Luschei, was a minister there and two of his children were born in Greenleaf. I don't see the name of the church in any current listings so I would appreciate hearing from someone who might know where records are or who can tell me anything about the church. Thank you kindly.
