    3. The Topeka Daily Capital Saturday July 15, 1939 George Modell, Jayhawk Auditor, Is Dead. George MODELL, 50, auditor for the Hotel Jayhawk, died Friday night in a local hospital, after being overcome with the heat while at work Thursday. This is the first fatal heat prostration in Topeka this summer. Mr. Modell was born December 10, 1888, in Milwaukee, Wis., and had been a resident of Topeka for the past twenty-five years. He was nationally recognized in hotel circles. Of a retiring disposition he was seldom seen "out front." He not only knew the details of the financing of the business, but also was familiar with engineering and catering end of the business. Handicapped with a crippled arm he could go out on the golf course and shoot a game with the above-average golfer and hold his own. He became associated with the Mosbys in the operation of the old National Hotel, and had a prominent part in the supervision of the erection and opening of the Hotel Jayhawk thirteen years ago. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elsie Modell of the home; 700 Park Lane; one daugter, Miss Myrth Modell, also of the home, and one brother, Emil Modell, St. Paul, Minn. Funeral services will be Monday morning at 10 o'clock at the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary, with interment in Topeka Cemetery.
