The Topeka Daily Capital Monday April 10, 1961 Aircraft Firm President Dies. Stacy G. CARKHUFF, Jr., president of Central Aircraft Charter Service and widely known in investment circles, died Sunday in a Topeka hospital. He was 49. He was born at Akron, Ohio, and was graduated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served as a 1st. Lt. during World War II and for a time was engineer for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co., of which his father was executive secretary. He held a national office in the Sports Car Club of America and started one in the Kansas region. He was a driver and official in many sport car races throughout the United States. Mr. Carkhuff visited Topeka in 1943, liked it and decided to remain. He spent some time in public relations work for the Menninger Foundation and later became associated with Aero Industuries of Cleveland, Ohio. He was interested in engines and in 1947 rebuilt a 1934 Duesenberg designed to reach a speed of more than 100 miles an hour in second gear in 12 seconds. He was active in amateur dramatics and played several roles in Topeka Civic Theater productions. He began his charter aircraft service here in 1956, and the business grew rapidly. He made a substantial financial gift to Stormont-Vail Hospital last year toward the purchase of a $61,000 X-ray machine for diagnostic studies of the heart and blood vessels of the brain. Mr. Carkhuff was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Junior Chamber of Commerce, and Topeka Country Club. He was skipper of the Sea Scout ship "Kansan." In 1951 he headed Shawnee County's "March of Dimes" campaign to fight polio. He also was a member of Grace Cathedral, Classic Car Club of America, the Horselss Carriage Club, Scottish Rite, York Rite, 32nd Degree Shriner, and the Elks' Club. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Nelle H. Carkhuff, and four children, Jett, 15, Sam, 11, Tim, 10 and Kate 7, all at home; another son, Stacy G. Carkhuff III of Akron, Ohio; a brother, John R. Carkhuff of Akron; and one granddaughter. Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary will announce funeral arrangements. The family suggests that contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
