    3. The Topeka Daily Capital Saturday August 19, 1961 Mrs. Shumate, 85, Topekan, Dies at Home. Mrs. Marie A. SHUMATE, a native Kansan, died Friday at her home, 1132 Quincy. She was 85. Born Nov. 17, 1875, near Perry, Mrs. Shumate was one of 10 children of the late John and Katherine KILLINGER, who came to Kansas as pioneers. After living a short time near Lawrence and in Jefferson County, they settled on a farm southwest of Topeka. Mrs. Shumate married James A. Shumate, March 7, 1900, and celebrated a golden wedding anniversary in 1950 before her husband died June 16 to that year. Five brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. Mrs. Shumate suffered a stroke five years ago. Survivors include a son, LaVerne J. Shumate of 718 Oakland; two daughters, Miss Katherine L. Shumate at home, and Mrs. Harold E. NAILL of 1715 Pembroke Lane, and a sister, Mrs. John SNYDER of 1621 Collins. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The Rev. Floyd Q. Davidson of the Seabrook Congregational Church, will officiate.
