The Topeka Daily Capital Friday August 12, 1910 Santa Fe Bridge Inspector Killed. Body Left at Undertaking Rooms and Wife Not Told Till Capital Reporter Went to House 3 Hours Later. Edwin W. BARNES, a bridge inspectior for the Santa Fe, was killed last night by Santa Fe passenger train No. 118, his body brought to Topeka and placed in L.M. Penwell's undertaking establishment and his wife and family left in complete ignorance of the accident till informed by a Capital reporter three hours later. Apparently little or no effort had been made to locate the man's family, which consists of a wife and two children. The conductor of the train turned the body over to the undertaker but gave no information as to his identity. The train which brought the body here arrived at 11:20. The accident occurred at 9:55. The details of the accident could not be learned by BARNES was supposedly on his hand car at the time. His body was fearfully cut and bruised and it is supposed he was injured internally. He died shortly after he reached Topeka. Inquiry failed to reveal BARNES' indentity and a Capital reporter and an assistant at the undertaking rooms carefully examined the papers which had been removed from the man's pockets and found on a card a Topeka address, 206 Klein street, east of the Santa Fe shops. The reporter went to the address and wakened Mrs. Barnes. She knew nothing of the accident and was almost prostrated with grief, and nearly collapsed. Neighbors were called in to render here what assistance they could. The body had been left at the undertaking establishment without any instruction as to informing the wife or family. All the information given the undertaker was that the man had been killed and that his names was Barnes. The investigation of the undertaker's assistant and the reporter was apparently the first move to find out the real identity of the man. The two children are Lola, 11 years old, and Frank, ten years old.
