    3. The Topeka Daily Capital Wednesday November 27, 1957 Mrs. Mildred Bowen Mrs. Mildren BOWEN, 57, wife of the Rev. U.S. Bowen, pastor of the East Hill Baptist Church, died Tuesday in a Topeka hospital after an illness of two weeks. She was born in Chicago and moved to Wichita with her parents when she was a child. She was a graduate of the Emporia State Teachers College. She was the first Negro social case worker in Sedgwick County before she resigned and went to Suehn Mission about 60 miles inland form Monrovia, West Africa, in 1928. She served there 10 years and was principal of the mission school for five years. She had lived in Topeka since 1939. She was active in the East Hill Baptist Church since her husband became pastor. She was Sunday School Superintendent, treasurer of the missionary union, a member of the choir and organizer and director of the youth choir. She was a former president of the Baptist Ministers Wives Auxiliary, and of the Interdenominational Ministers Wives Auxiliary. She was director of the Kaw Valley District Association's young people's work and was in charge of Camp KVBC east of Topeka. She served as chairman of the committee on foreign missions of the National Baptist Convention, Inc., and was vice president and chairman of the executive board of the NAACP. She was a candidate for the school board at the last election. Besides her husband, she is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Mabel PRYOR, Topeka; Mrs. Raymond HILL, Salina; Mrs. Elizabeth MORRIS, and Mrs. Virginia HUNTER of Denver, Colo. Gaines & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
