    3. The Topeka Daily Capital Tuesday March 26, 1968 Clifford Watson Dead in Topeka. Clifford R. WATSON, 77, 820 Polk, died Monday in a Topeka hospital where he had been admitted Sunday after he suffered a heart attack. He was a teacher and was a well-known school administrator in Shawnee County many years. He was born April 23, 1890, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Barclay Watson. He moved to Douglas County, Kan., with his parents in 1904. He attended Hesper Academy near Lawrence and attended the University of Kansas 2 1/2 years. He was graduated from Friends University, Wichita. He began his career as a teacher at Wabaunsee School in Wabaunsee County and later taught in rural high schools in Kansas five years. He was principal of State Street Elementary School in Topeka from 1921 to 1951. He was Shawnee County superintendent of public instruction from May, 1951 to until he retired in June, 1955. Mr. Watson was a member of First Methodist Church and was an Honorary steward of the church. He was a member of Siloam Lodge No. 225, AF&AM, and was a life member of National Education Assn., Kansas State Teachers Assn., and Topeka Teachers Assn., and Kansas Assn. of Parents and Teachers. He was a former member and chairman of the Shawnee County Planning Commission and later was chairman of the Topeka-Shawnee County Regional Palnning Commission. He also was a former member of the Shawnee County Zoning Board of Appeals. Mr. Watson was a 25-year member and past president of Downtown Kiwanis Club and was past chairman of Shawnee Kiwanis Youth Camp. He formerly was a member of the board of directors of the Topeka Roundup Club and was a past president of the Kansas County Superintendents Assn. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dora Louk Watson, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Robert McCRACKEN Sr., 1903 MacVicar; three brothers, Dr. Herbert Watson, Handford, Calif., Dr. S.A. Watson, Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Ben Watson, Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Mrs. Margaret HILL, El Monte, Calif.; two grandsons and a granddaughter. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in First Methodist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Watson will lie in state from 6 p.m. Tuesday until 9 p.m. Wednesday in Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. The casket will be closed at the church.
