[I obtained the following information from the Civil War pension file for William GIBBS, b. abt. 1827 in Ireland and died in Topeka on 03 Mar 1899. I was seeking information on one of my ancestors who, as it turns out, was a different William GIBBS. I am posting what I discovered in the hopes that it may benefit someone to whom this individual was connected. Note: William, Hannah and John D GIBBS are buried in section 6 of Mount Calvary Cemetery, Topeka.] William GIBBS was born abt. 1827 in Kings County, Ireland. He married Hanna DALEY on 12 Nov 1856 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Albany, New York. Witnesses were James GIBBS and Bridget GIBBS. According to the file, neither had been married previously. They had one sone, John D. GIBBS, b. 10 Apr 1861. William fought for the Union Army and was wounded on 03 Jun 1864 during the Battle of Cold Harbor. He was shot in the left knee and hip. According to medical records that were filed as part of his claim to receive benefits, William's wounds qualified him for "invalid" status, leaving him with paralysis that appeared to worsen with time. William and Hannah moved to the Topeka area in 1874. William was a U.S. citizen. He resided at 412 E. 10th Street, Topeka at the time of his death. His funeral took place at Assumption Church, with Fr. F.M. HAYDEN officiating. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo!
