McBROOM, 69, Topeka contractor, died at his home, 435 Liberty street, yesterday morning. He was born in Lafayette, Ind., and settled in Topeka in 1886. he had been in the contracting business continually until his last illness. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. E.D. MOREHOUSE, Van Nuyes, Calif.; two sons, Eugene McBROOM, Los Angeles, Calif., and Clarence McBROOM, Topeka, and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. His body will lie in state at Penwell's chapel.

Financial Leader Here for 27 Years, 12 as Head of the Aetna Building and Loan. Funeral services for John Sayre DOWNES, 72, former president of the Aetna Building & Loan Association, who died at his home, 712 West Eighth avenue, Thursday night, will be at the Wall-Diffenderfer mortuary at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon. Burial will be in Topeka cemetery. Mr. DOWNES was born in Oneida county, N.Y., August 31, 1855. At the age of 20 he came to Kansas and settled in Marion. For three years he was a farmer and stockraiser. Then he entered the real estate business. Came Here From Marion in 1896. In 1896 he disposed of his Marion holdings and came to Topeka, where he became associated with the Aetna Building & Loan association. He was associated with that Topeka financial institution 27 years and served 12 years as its president. He was recognized as a man of sterling business qualities and of unquestionable honesty in his dealings. In June, 1883, Mr. DOWNES married Elizabeth CARTER of Kentucky. Besides his wife he is survived by two children, Roy H. DOWNES and Mrs. W. S. STADEL, Topeka; a borther, A.E. DOWNES, New York City; and two grandsons, Robert Roy MIZE and John Robert DOWNES, Topeka. The Aetna Building & Loan association enjoyed a remarkable growth during Mr. DOWNES' association with that institution. It grew from a small concern to an organization that extended thruout the United States and into foreign countries. He held the office until 1922. Mr. DOWNES was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and of the Grace cathedral.

He was a former resident of Topeka and for many years was connected with the Warren M. Crosby company. His daughter, Miss Jennie MAXWELL, of Topeka left yesterday for Elk Grove.

Gaylord Leamond LeRoy TIBBITS, 15-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Claud TIBBITS, died yesterday at the home of his parents, 420 East Fairchild. Surviving him besides his parents is one sister, Helen Lois TIBBITS. Funeral services will be Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the First Christian church. Burial will be in Mount Auburn cemetery.
The Topeka Daily Capital Friday November 11, 1927 Teacher For Many Years. J.C. Banta Was County Superintendent in Douglas County. J.C. BANTA, 71, who died Monday in Carthage, Mo., a former resident of Topeka, was educated at baker university at Kansas university and for many years served as a teacher in grade schools and as county superintendent of schools in Douglas county. At one time he taught in the Kansas university. He was interested in the growing of fruit and devoted much time to this business and in 1920 retired from active commercial life. He was fond of outdoor life and spent many winters in the south and in Canada. In 1880 he married Margaret MORRISON. There were nine children. Surviving him are his widow, one daughter and six sons.
The Topeka Daily Capital Thursday November 10, 1927 Edward W. Neill, 83, Dies. Civil War Veteran, Settled in Shawnee County in 1861. Edward W. NEILL, 83, veteran of the Civil war and old resident of Shawnee county, died in his home, 1313 East Tenth avenue, yesterday morning. He was a member of the 11th Kansas cavalry during the Civil war. He settled in Shawnee county in 1861 and was a farmer and stockraiser until he retired 10 years ago. He leaves his wife, and a daughter, Mrs. Esther PITTKER, Clearmont, Mo., and four brothers, George and John NEILL, Topeka; James NEILL, Wakarusa, and Thomas NEILL, Quenemo. The body will lie in state in Shellabarger's chapel today. Funeral services will be in the Free Methodist church at 9:30 o'clock tomorrow morning. Burial will be in Mount Zion cemetery, near Vassar.
The Topeka Daily Capital Thursday November 10, 1927 Abraham McKee Dead. Civil War Veteran, 89, Long a Resident of Kansas. Abraham McKEE, 80, veteran of the Civil war and pioneer resident of Kansas, died in his home, 938 Winfield avenue, yesterday afternoon after a long illness. Mr. McKEE was born in Delaware county, Indiana, in 1838. he came to Kansas in July 1858, and settled on a homestead in Pottawatomie county near American City. He afterward moved to Havenville, where he resided 28 years. he was active in muncipal politics there, being a member of the Havensville city council eight years and mayor four years. He had been a resident of Topeka 18 years. When the Civil war broke out he enlisted in the First Kansas battery. He served in that unit three years and 10 months. He leaves his wife, three daughters, who are Mrs. Nancy DENNIS, Onaga; Mrs. A.M. TUCKER and Mrs. James CAVERT, Topeka; five step-daughters, Mrs. May WILSON, Mrs. Laura RENBERGER, Mrs. Nettie HARDING, Mrs. Clara FLORENCE, and Mrs. Margaret CONWAY, all of Topeka; a stepson, Jack WILSON, Flagstaff, Ariz.; two sisters, Mrs. Massie WHITE, Manhattan, and Mrs. Sarah WHITE, Havensville, and a brother, Barton McKEE, Havensville. Funeral services will be in Penwell's chapel at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning. Burial will be in Havensville.
The Topeka Daily Capital Friday February 26, 1954 William B. Proper. William B. PROPER, 58, died unexpectedly early Thursday morning at his home, 514 Lime, after a heart attack. He was born April 13, 1895, in Frankton, N.Y., and had lived in Topeka 35 years. He was a bookbinder at the Capper Publications plant for many years and at the time of his death was employed at the state printing plant. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the Topeka Bookbinders Union. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lillian L. ATKINS, Topeka; and Mrs. Florence Irene MOLL, Richmond, Mo.; two sons, Donald Dean PROPER, of the U.S. Air Force and Robert Eugene PROPER of the U.S. Army, and five grandchildren.

He was bron September 17, 1881, near Denison and was a lifelong resident of the Denison community. She was graduated from the Overbrook High School and later was graduated from the Christ's Hospital School of Nursing in Topeka in 1913. She is survived by her husband, Floyd M. PLEASANT, Craig, Colo.; three sons, Sidney E. and Floyd J. PLEASANT, Craig; and Rex M. PLEASANT with the Army overseas; her mother, Mrs. Jennie ERNST, Overbrook; and two sisters, Bessie ERNST, and Mrs. Dorothy KARNES, both of Overbrook. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Overbrook Methodist Church with burial in Overbrook Cemetery.
The Topeka Daily Capital Friday February 26, 1954 Rev. Herbert Johnson Dies of Heart Attack. The Rev. Herbert A. JOHNSON, pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, died from a heart attack early Thursday afternoon while driving his car near 10th and Kansas. The car came to a stop without damaging any other vehicles. and he died before he was taken from the car. He was born in Gilmer, Texas, and came to Topeka in 1923. He was a graduate of the Kansas Baptist Theological Seminary. he was pastor of the Wimberly Baptist Church in Osage City for five years. He was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Eskridge for a short time and then became pastor of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church, a charge he had for seven years. He had been pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church since 1940. He is a former treasurer and vice-president of the Baptist Ministerial Alliance and was a member of the Kaw Valley District Baptist Association, the Kansas State Missionary Baptist Association, The Carver YMCA, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and a member of the executive committee of the East Side Improvement Club. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lena L. JOHNSON of the home, 802 Wood; a foster son, Herbert BROOKS, Topeka; two sisters, Mrs. Martha DICK and Mrs. Cleo FINLEY, both of Gilmer, Texas; a half-brother, O.B. WEAVER, Gilmer, Texas; four nephews, including Leon and Nathaniel BROOKS of Topeka, a niece and an aunt.

The Topeka Daily Capital Thursday February 25, 1954 William Happe. William HAPPE, 71, former Topekan, died Wednesday at his home in Mission, Kan. He was born April 9, 1882, in Carroll County, Iowa, and moved to Topeka when he was a boy. He was a Santa Fe employee several years. Later, he became associated with the Consumers Sand Co. and was superintendent of the plant for 20 years. In 1935 he moved to Mission, Kan., and founded his own company. He was married June 6, 1901, to Miss Maude CAWKER of Topeka, a sister of William J. CAWKER, fire chief. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, William C. HAPPE of Topeka, and Raymond F. HAPPE of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Tressa FISHER of Mission, Kan.; three sisters, Mrs. Tressa FISH, Mrs. C.E. SNEDEKER and Mrs. Margaret KEARNEY, all of Topeka, and one grandchild. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery.
The Topeka Daily Capital Thursday February 25, 1954 Edward E. Patterson, Retired Fireman, Dies. Edward E. "Pat" PATTERSON, 61, retired city fireman, died Wednesday morning in a Topeka hospital after a long illness. He was born April 21, 1892 at Melvern and served in France with the 89th Division during World War I. He joined the Topeka Fire Department September 26, 1919, shortly after he was discharged from the Army and remained on the department until he voluntarily retired February 18, 1943. He was at headquarters fire station until March 1, 1939, when he transferred to No. 5 station. He later was chief of the fire department at Winter Veterans Hospital for two years. He then entered the real estate business in Topeka. He was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church, Topeka Lodge No. 17, A.F. & A.M., the Arab Shrine, American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ella Brackman PATTERSON, of the home, 1121 Polk; and an uncle Clifford PATTERSON of Newton. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Looking for information on John aka Jack ROMESBURG He was born 1775-1887 supposedly in Iowa. He was owner or part owner of a hotel in Topeka, KS. One of his daughters last saw him there in the late 1950's - early 1960's. If you have any information on this man it would be greatly appreciated, date of death, place of death, place of burial, any living relatives, etc. The spelling of his surname could vary Romesburg, Romesberg, Ramsberg, Ramsburg, etc. Any information at all may help us trace his line back further.
