    3. The Topeka Daily Capital Tuesday July 18, 1936 Another Heat Death In Topeka. Calvin C. HAWKINS, 58, chef at Elmhurst Grill, died early this morning at his home, 1286 Lane Street, after suffering heat prostration Sunday night. Hawkins went home ill Sunday night, complaining of becoming too hot while working, and died shortly after he retired. Dr. H.A. Alexander, county coroner, said. This was the second death from the heat in Topeka this summer. He is survived by his wife, living at Goff, Kan. Funeral arrangements have not been made.

To try and help fill in gaps on some one found murdered in Indiana in 1916, letters on him were addressed by a Eva no last name at 1426 Quincy. also the person who was the informant on the death certificate in Indiana was a Mrs. M.E or M.S. Bass at the same address. The coroner's report said they first thought that Eva was his wife, then said maybe she was his fiancée. would anyone have any ideas on how to find anything out. He was born July 16, 1878, near Barnes, Kan., and lived in the Barnes community until he moved to Topeka seven years ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Barnes. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bessie Wanamaker, of the home; six sons, Floyd D. Wanamaker, of Russell, Howard Wanamker of Stockton, Sherred, W. Orman, Mr. Jay and M. Eugene Barnes all of Topeka; three daughters, Mrs. Ralph CLARK of Frankfort, Mrs. Orville THOMAS of Sabetha, and Mrs. Joe MIDDLETON of Burlington, Wis.; five brothers, George and Glenn Wanamaker of Barnes, Fred Wanamaker of Washington, Jay Wanamaker of Manhattan, and Wallace Wanamaker of Waterville; two sisters, Mrs. Cora BROWN of Topeka, and Mrs. Hugh CALEY of Greeley, Colo.; 23 granchildren and six great-grandchildren. HUGHES, 89, widow of a former pastor of the Kansas Avenue Methodist Church, died January 4, at the home of her daughter, Miss Evelyn Hughes, in Alexandria, Va. Mrs. Hughes was born in Catasauqua, Pa., and was educated at Centernary Collegiate Institute at Hackettstown, N.Y. Her husband was pastor of the Kansas Avenue Methodist Church in Topeka from 1925 until his death in 1927. He also had charges at Clay Center and Council Grove and at St. Joseph, Mo.; Malvern, Corydon, Leon, Atlantic and Sioux City, Iowa; Mount Holly and Trenton, N.J. , and Brookville and Union, N.Y. Since his death, MRs. Hughes had been making her home with her daughter, who is an employee of the U.S. Department of Labor. Besides her daughter, she is survived by a son, Arthur F. Hughes, St. Louis, Mo.; a borther, Samuel FUNK, Bethlehem, Pa., and two granddaughters. Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery.

He had been living alone.     3. The Topeka Daily Capital Monday April 10, 1961 Aircraft Firm President Dies. Stacy G. CARKHUFF, Jr., president of Central Aircraft Charter Service and widely known in investment circles, died Sunday in a Topeka hospital. He was 49. He was born at Akron, Ohio, and was graduated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served as a 1st. Lt. during World War II and for a time was engineer for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co., of which his father was executive secretary. He held a national office in the Sports Car Club of America and started one in the Kansas region. He was a driver and official in many sport car races throughout the United States. Mr. Carkhuff visited Topeka in 1943, liked it and decided to remain. He spent some time in public relations work for the Menninger Foundation and later became associated with Aero Industuries of Cleveland, Ohio. He was interested in engines and in 1947 rebuilt a 1934 Duesenberg designed to reach a speed of more than 100 miles an hour in second gear in 12 seconds. He was active in amateur dramatics and played several roles in Topeka Civic Theater productions. He began his charter aircraft service here in 1956, and the business grew rapidly. He made a substantial financial gift to Stormont-Vail Hospital last year toward the purchase of a $61,000 X-ray machine for diagnostic studies of the heart and blood vessels of the brain. Mr. Carkhuff was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Junior Chamber of Commerce, and Topeka Country Club. He was skipper of the Sea Scout ship "Kansan." In 1951 he headed Shawnee County's "March of Dimes" campaign to fight polio. He also was a member of Grace Cathedral, Classic Car Club of America, the Horselss Carriage Club, Scottish Rite, York Rite, 32nd Degree Shriner, and the Elks' Club. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Nelle H. Carkhuff, and four children, Jett, 15, Sam, 11, Tim, 10 and Kate 7, all at home; another son, Stacy G. Carkhuff III of Akron, Ohio; a brother, John R. Carkhuff of Akron; and one granddaughter. Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary will announce funeral arrangements. The family suggests that contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Diffenderfer was born Nov. 30, 1907 at McLouth. She had been employed at Parkview Drugs and Crosby Brothers and was a member of the Indpendence Boulevard Christian Church of Kansas City. She lived in Topeka about 30 years. Surviving are her widower, Quentin R. Diffenderfer at home; and her mother, Mrs. Nellie BARRY, 520 Taylor. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery at Lawrence.
