    3. The Topeka Daily Capital Wednesday May 26, 1920 J.F. Scott Is Dead. He and Three Sons Bought Paxton Store Two Months Ago. J.F. Scott, 68 years old, one of the proprietors of the new Scott Dry Goods Co., successors to Paxton & Paxton, died last night in a local hospital after an operation. Mr. Scott and his three sons, A.E. Scott, R.S. Scott and C.A. Scott, took over Paxton's store two months ago. Mr. Scott was in the dry goods business about fifty years. His first store, operated by himself and his brother, Carter Scott at Davis City, Ia., is still being operated by Carter Scott. He and his three sons now operate stores in Blytheville, Mo., Topeka and Herington, Kan. Another brother, W.H. Scott, operates a dry goods store in St. Joseph, Mo. Mr. Scott's death marks the second in a family of fifteen children. The death of a younger brother Dr. Daniel Voorhees Scott, a pominent physician in Louisville, Ky., fourteen years ago, was the first. Seven brothers survive; also six sisters, three sons, three daughters, and his widow. Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed.

    3. The Topeka Daily Capital Wednesday May 26, 1920 Haying Accident Fatal To Frank W. Helm, Farmer. Falling Barn Door Stretched Rope, Breaking His Neck. He Was Repairing Hay Swing, and Was Caught and Pinned to Timbers When Rope Jerked. Frank W. HELM, 36, was killed almost instantly at 9:30 o'clock yesterday morning at his home east of the city, when he was caught by the neck by the hay swing rope inside of his barn. His neck was broken. Mr. Helm, at the time of the accident, was repairing the hay swing. The door in the barn loft, fastened to the rope, suddenly fell to the side of the barn while he was trying to force it open. The rope caught him by the neck as it was stretched out by the weight of the falling door, and pinned him to some timbers. Mr. Helm was a native of Kansas. He was born In Pottawatomie county and lived there twenty-six years. Ten years ago he moved to Mission Center. Last year he settled on the farm east of Topeka. He is survived by his widow, two children, Callista, 6, and William, 4; his mother, Mrs. Mary Helm, who lives in Rochester district, north of the city and three brothers, Roy T. Helm and Perry Helm, all of whom live near Topeka. (Note: Only two brothers were mentioned in article. Typed as printed.)

Morgan, of Oklahoma. SCHELL--Mrs. Mary SCHELL, aged 4?, died Thursday night at her home, 132 North Chandler street.     3. The Topeka Daily Capital Saturday January 31, 1921 Mrs. Metz Dies Suddenly. Stricken With Hear Failure, She Dies Without Regaining Consciousness. Mrs. Cora METZ, aged 49, suffered a sudden stroke of heart disease shortly before 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon at her home, 1147 Clay street, and died a half hour later without regaining consciousness. She apparently had been in good health up to the time she was stricken. Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed. She is survived by her husband and five children, Miss Bertha Metz, Miss Thelma Metz, and Henry Metz, all of Topeka; Mrs. Mary CLEARMAN of Ottawa and Ralph Metz of Emporia.

    3. The Topeka Daily Capital Saturday January 31, 1921 Mudge, Former Santa Fe General Manager, Dies. President of Rock Island and Rio Grande. Career of Pioneer Kansan Began With Job as Section Hand--Reached Pinnacle in His Profession. H.U. MUDGE, former president of the Rock Island and of the Denver & Rio Grande, general mannager of the Santa Fe with headquarters in Topeka, and former one of the most widely known railroad officials in the country, died yesterday in Denver, Colo. Death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage. He was stricken Monday night in his Denver home. He was 64 years of age. Mr. Mudge began his railroad career with the humbliest of jobs--that of working on the section. In 1871 at the age of 15, he came with his parents in a wagon from Michigan to Sterling, Kan. The Santa Fe at that time had reached a point of twelve miles west of Sterling and was being pushed westward at the rate of two miles a day. He applied to the foreman of the track-laying gang for a job. He first was employed as water boy and soon afterward became a common laborer. When the road reached the Colorado line, he returned to Sterling. His Advance Was Rapid. By this time Mudge was interested in railroad work and asked the agent at Sterling to teach him telegraphy. In three months he had become well enough acquainted at the key to be give the position of extra operator. In June 1872, he became night operator at Pease, a small station west of Hutchinson. From there he was transferred to Carbondale, where he spent the next three years as night operator. After leaving Carbondale he became a baggageman on the run to Denver and during the next twelve years, he was successively brakeman, conductor, train dispatcher, and roadmaster. In 1889 Mr. Mudge became train master at San Marcial and later assistant superintendent of the Rio Grande division. In 1896 he was promoted general superintendent of the entire Santa Fe system with headquarters at Topeka. He became general manager of the road in January, 1900. FIve yeras later he resigned to become second vice president of the Rock Island in charge of the operating department. President of R.I. in 1910. In 1910 Mr. Mudge was elected president of the Rock Island, a position he held until he resigned in 1915 to become president of the Rio Grande retiring in 1918. Since his retirement from railroad life two years ago, he had made his home in Denver, tho he spent much of his time on his New Mexico ranch. He is survived by his widow and four sons, Burton W. Mudge who is in the railroad supply business at Chicago, Charles M. Mudge, George Paul Mudge and Hugh U. Mudge.

    3. The Topeka Daily Capital Tuesday April 30, 1918 Sore Finger Fatal. J.J. Caton Dies From Blood Poisoning in Santa Fe Hospital. J.J. CATON, 65, 185 Michigan avenue, Oakland, died at 12 o'clock Monday night at the Santa Fe hospital of blood poisoning. Caton had been employed at the Santa Fe shops for twelve years and a week ago Monday came home complaining that a finger pained him terribly. Infection was discovered and he gradually became weaker. Besides a widow, he is survived by eight children, Harley Caton, Omaha; Mrs. Clark GRESSER, Oakland; Mrs. Grace KING, Kansas City, Mo.; Clarence W. Caton, Grafton, Neb.; Raymond Caton, Florence Caton, Gladys and Hazel Caton of Oakland.

The changes were announced today when it became known that Miss Emma VIETS, special assistant auditor, would resign to enter the offices of the Kansas Life Insurance company in Topeka at an increased salary. The position formerly filled by Miss Viets will be give to Miss Mayme CONROY, of Beloit, at present chief clerk. Mrs. Bertha WETHERTON, of Topeka, now assistant chief clerk, will be advanced to chief clerk and Miss Lena SCHOENFELD of Topeka, a stenographer in the office, will be made assistant chief clerk.     3. The Topeka Daily State Journal Tuesday April 30, 1918 Mrs. W.O. Rigby Dies. Victim of Appendicitis Was Wife of Postmaster in Topeka. Olive Blanche RIGBY, wife of Postmaster W.O. Rigby, died at 8:15 o'clock this morning in a local hospital. Mrs. Rigby had undergone two operations for appendicitis, one of them last Thursday and one Monday. Mrs. Rigby was born in Somerset, Ohio, October 8, 1871. She married W.O. Rigby, February 12, 1896. Before her death she was a member of the Toltec Rite, a Masonic order, and of the Masonic unit of the American Red Cross. Mrs. Rigby had been very active in Red Cross work in Topeka, taking an active part in all of the Red Cross war fund and membership campaigns. SHe also worked faithfully in other branches of war activities; notably for the liberty loans, the thrift stamp and baby bond campaigns, the Salvation Army campaign, and the Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A. campaigns. Mrs. Rigby was a member of the Mysotis club, the Topeka Avenue club, the Elwell club, and others. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

    3. The Topeka Daily State Journal Tuesday April 23, 1918 Death of H.S. Douglas. Well Known Topeka Contractor Built Many Buildings Here. Harry S. DOUGLAS, 58 years old, a well known Topeka contractor, died shortly after 7 o'clock Monday night at his home, 1122 College avenue. He had been in failing health for some time but until about four weeks before his death he had been able to be about his work. He is survived by a widow and eleven children, nine of whom living at home. One son is a member of the 110 Field Signal Battalion at Camp Doniphan, and one daughter, Mrs. W. E. THOMSON, is living at Bozeman, Mont. Innumerable house and buildings in Topeka and other cities of Kansas are monuments to the Douglas ability. In Topeka the Elks club building and the Mills building are the outstanding achievements of his skill. No arrangements for the funeral have been announced.

JOHNSON, 74 years old, died at her home in the Virginia apartments this morning. Mrs. Johnson was the widow of the late Col. A.S. Johnson, a Kansas pioneer, and one of the first big men in the Santa Fe in Kansas. It is said that Colonel Johnson was the first male child of the white race to be born in the territory of Kansas.
