The Liberal Daily News Seward County Monday November 22, 1920 Officers Find Illicit Still In Seward Co. Saturday Night Seward County Officers Raided a Farm in North Park of County and Secured Sufficient Evidence. Saturday night a complaint was made by the Sheriff of Seward County and search warrants made out and the officers of the county left for the north of the county to search the farm of John CARRELL, for an illicit still. The officials found the still in good condition for operation and it was plain to see that it had just been used. A continued search brought two barrels of green liquor to view. This booze was not in conditions to use and so far as can be learned none of it had been disposed of, in fact the men swore that it had been made for personal use only. John Carrell was arrested and charged with having liquor in his possession. He was fined $100 and give a jail sentence of thirty days. Bill MORRIS, who made the liquor, is from Kentucky. It seems he had a good recipe for making hootch and interested Mr. Carrell in his proposition, persuading him to give him permission to place a still on his farm. Morris was charged not only with having liquor in his possession but with making it. His punishment wasa $250 fine and sixty days in jail.
