The Liberal Daily Democrat Seward County Tuesday January 11, 1921 Arkalon Sandpits Reveals Mastodon. Few Hugh Bones Excavated and Other Prehistoric Relics. There Are More To Get. G.A. Krell Is Making A Collection. G.R. KRELL of Arkalon, who operates the sand-pits near there, called at the Democrat office Monday, to tell us about his recent discovery of a monster of the past ages, and to show some of the bones he has unearthed in his sand-pits. Mr. Krell has been working the sand pits on the Forbes ranch near the Cimarron, for the past nine years, and from time to time great bones were exposed and he dug man of them out and kept them. He has a horn and a tusk about two feet long and four or five inches in diameter; a shoulder blade that is enormous; a joint which has a diameter of a foot or more, besides numerous teeth that look as though they came from a mastodon-like creature. He has found a number of what he calls stone cups. They are hollow stone vessels, smaller than a tea cup, but look more as though the prehistoric man had made them instead of nature. The discovery of this prehistoric animal was found about twelve feet beneath the surface. It is somewhat scattered, and Mr. Krell's opointon is that it had died, and after the disintregating of the body, the wind and sand had blown the skelton over a small area and finally buried it with sand. Among other things he has a rib. It is a flat bone, abotu two and one-half inches wide and eighteen inches long, and has a very slight curve. One piece of unsual interest, is a piece of bone about the size of a child's hand, which has the appearance of fins piled on one another, about five fins, which have cemented together and filled in with sand. It is a puzzling specimen. It many be termed a tooth, in spite of its fin-like appearance. It is of ivory-like polish, but colored like a merschaum pipe. Mr. Krell will put the display on exhibition in this city soon, where those interested may look the specimen over. He says not all the mammoth animal has been excavated, but stil lies buried in the sand pits.
