C. Dunlap came to Kansas in a covered wagon from a farm near York, Nebraska in 1878. They and their infant son, George Adolphus, homesteaded in Lowell Township about three miles south and two miles west of Woodston. Their first home was a combination dugout and sod house. Next they built a two room limestone house which became their permanent home. In later years a frame extension was added. This was occupied until June 1961 when their son, George, moved into Woodston. The elder Dunlaps moved into Woodston in 1888. Mr. Dunlap had built a store in 1882 or 1883. It was the second store built in Woodston. He sold groceries, drygoods, hardware, furniture and farm implements. (He was also an undertaker.) In 1898 he sold eggs for one cent a dozen but in 1899 they sold for eight cents a dozen. (How's that for inflation?) Butter was ten cents a pound and dressed turkays were six cents a pound. Several years after the store began business J. M. Stehley bought the grocery and dry goods part of the business, but Mr. Dunlap continued the hardware and implements until his death in 1925. Peter Carr Dunlap was born November 17, 1848; died December 23, 1925 at Woodston, Kansas. He married Fedelia Jane Hansel, born 1854; died November 24, 1944 at Seward, Nebraska. Peter and Fedelia were the parents of five sons and a daughter. Their oldest son, George Adolphus was born at York, Nebraska on August 30, 1876; died January 24, 1964 at Woodston. As a young man he went to Missouri Valley, Iowa where he married Myrtle Adeline Frazier, born July 24, 1878 at Missouri Valley; died November 7, 1937 at Woodston, on September 9, 1898. (Myrtle was the daughter of Joseph and Nancy (Lucky) Frazier.) George and Myrtle were the parents of five daughters, all of whom were born at Missouri Valley before they returned to Woodston in March 1910. The oldest, Rosa Viola May, born September 29, 1899, died February 28, 1962 at Woodston. She never married. Grace Jane Dunlap, their second daughter, born January 25, 1901, married Charles Orville Vanderlip on May 14, 1924. He was born at Woodston on January 26, 1902, died July 31, 1969. They adopted one boy, Richard Lee, on May 6, 1938. Their third daughter, Myrtle Maybelle, born March 22, 1903, married Darrell Orval Cunningham on April 29, 1925. He was born at Glade on April 21, 1904, died October 15, 1975 at Phillipsburg. Darrell and Myrtle were the parents of three sons, all born at Glade: Darrell Orval, born February 7, 1927; DeVane Awyn, born March 27, 1929 and Donnie Eldon, born December 10, 1935. George and Myrtle's fourth daughter, Golda Anna, married Perry Russ on July 24, 1930. He was born at Bethany Missouri on December 24, 1908. She was born August 13, 1907. They had no children. Their youngest daughter, Stella Louise, born November 3, 1909; died August 11, 1940, married Robert Edward Russ in 1931. Robert was born at Bethany, Missouri on July 24, 1905. They were parents of a son, Richard Eugene, born October 4, 1933. The second son of Peter and Fedelia, Arthur Carr, born November 23, 1878 at Woodston, died August 1961. He never married. The third son, Earl, was born at Woodston on August 15, 1880 and died in 1957 at Olathe, Colorado. Walter, the fourth son, was born September 23, 1882 at Woodston; died February 14, 1942 at Woodston. He married Vera M. Hadley of Woodston in 1912. She was born May 10, 1889 and died September 9, 1974 at Woodston. Walter and Vera were the parents of three sons, all born at Woodston: Gerald Hadley, Walter and Paul Carr Dunlap. Rosa M. Dunlap, daughter of Peter and Fedelia, was born in Woodston on June 12, 1885, died November 28, 1978. She married Newell McNutt in 1908. He died in 1918. There were no children. She married John DeGrood on September 9, 1931. He was born in Holland and came to the United States with his parents when he was eleven years old. There were no children from this marriage. Freddie Dunlap, youngest child of Peter and Fedelia, was born July 17, 1887 and died on July 18, 1890. A few years after 1890 Peter Carr and Fedelia were divorced and Peter married a second time to Daisy Stannard who came to Kansas from Connecticut with her family. Daisy was born in 1867 and died at Woodston in 1914. Peter Carr and Daisy were the parents of a son and four daughters. Percy Clyde Dunlap was born at Woodston on March 1, 1897. On October 3, 1925 he married Tilda Dodrill, daughter of Isaac James and Emma Elsa (Northrup) Dodrill of Stockton, Kansas. They were married in Prescott, Arizona. Percy Clyde has spent most of his adult life in California where he and Tilda have adopted and raised two girls, Kathryn Jean and Carol Ann, both of whom were born in Los Angeles. Florence Dunlap, the oldest daughter of Daisy and Peter, was born in Woodston on December 12, 1898. She has spent most of her adult life in Colorado. She married 1. John Trueblood. They have one daughter Lydia; 2. Will Green and 3. Harlan Pierce. Vivian, the second daughter of Daisy and Peter, was born in Woodston on December 21, 1900, died 1947, She spent her entire life in Woodston and never married. Elsa May and Elva Fay, twin daughters of Daisy and Peter, were born on November 21, 1907 at Woodston. They have not married and have about divided their time between Woodston, Denver and the Los Angeles area of California. Fedelia Jane Dunlap married a second time to Judd Avery of Woodston. They were the parents of Minnie and Stella Avery, born July 1895. Submitted by Perry Russ.
