May married Charles Aldrich, and they had two sons, Leslie Vincent and Freeman. May was living at the Solomon Valley Home in Stockton in 1985. She was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. J. M. Manion. Elton taught school for a few years and spent most of his life farming north of Woodston. In 1958 they retired and lived in Woodston until their deaths. Their children were (1) Irma Marie (Mrs. Robert) Lee, living at Smith Center; (2) Elaine (Mrs. Paul) Gordon, Canon City, Colorado; (3) June (Mrs. Gerald) Downing, Englewood Colorado; and (4) Rev. Donald G. Murphy, McCook, Nebraska. They had 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Cora's great-great-grandfather, Daniel Northrup, served as soldier in the War of the Revolution as a sergeant in Col. Archibald McCrary's Rhode Island Regiment in 1776. Later, Daniel and his family joined a group of settlers in Washington County, Ohio in 1979. Daniel's fourth child, Hampton Northrup II, was captured by Indians when fourteen years until he was found by some missionaries and acted as their guide and interpreter among the Indian tribes. Hampton Northrup II was Cora's great-grandfather. Hampton's son, Stephen Monroe Northrup, was Cora's grandfather. Stephen's seventh child, Mathilda Rachel Northrup, born October 4, 1854 in Ohio was Cora's mother. Mathilda Rachel Northrup married Joseph Hawkins Alexander, February 9, 1871. Cora May Alexander was born on July 29, 1872 in Indianapolis, Iowa. Cora was the only child of Mathlda and Joseph Alexander. When Cora w! as seven years old the family moved to Kansas. Her early life was spent on a homestead one and one-half miles north of the Woodston site which was not planned and laid out as a town until the summer of 1884, when the Missouri Pacific Railroad was built going west through Rooks County. Cora attended several schools, some in a sod building like her first home which was a sod house. Later her family built a home of logs and stone. Cora was a member of the United Brethren Church from early childhood. On September 6, 1891, Cora married William W. Murphy. They became part of the farm community north of Woodston. Three sons were born, Elton J. Murphy, October 9, 1893, Ward Alexander Murphy, April 26, 1897, Rollen Emery Murphy, December 14, 1901. Cora's husband, William, died March 15, 1942 and Cora moved from the farm to Woodston. She lived in Woodston many years, sharing her love with others. Her beautiful flower gardens were her pride and joy. Cora Alexander Murphy died October 5, 1957. Cora's Son, Elton J. Murphy, married Alice May Manion, June 6, 1915. They had four children: Irma Murphy Lee, Elaine Murphy Gordon, June Murphy Downing and Donald Murphy. Cora's son, Ward Alexander Murphy married Hazel Belle Walton, July 7, 1915. Two children were born, Velda Maye Murphy Dunlap and Walton Wardell Murphy. Rollen Emery Murphy, son of Cora, married Esther May Cook, April 30, 1925. Three children were born: Wilma F. Murphy Sherman, Marvin L. Murphy and Lorna R. Murphy Agard. Elton Murphy, Ward Murphy and Rollen Murphy raised their families in the Woodston community. The original homestead farmland was held by the Murphys and provided a prosperous livelihood. The descendants of Cora Alexander Murphy are now living in Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa and Arkansas. Oliva Western Books Woodston, Kansas 67675 1985 pages 177 & 178 DUNLAP, WALTER Walter Dunlap, son of P. C. and Fedelia Jane Dunlap, was born near Woodston on September 23, 1882. He moved to Woodston with the family at an early age, where he grew to manhood and became asociated with his father in the hardware and implement business. Walter married Vera M. Hadley of Cawker City, on July 3, 1912. They had three sons: Walter Jr., Gerauld H., and Paul C. All were born in Woodston. In 1925 the family moved to a farm north of Woodston where they lived and farmed until the tragic death of Walter on February 14, 1942. During those years, the three sons graduated from Woodston Rural High School. In 1985 Gerauld lives on a farm one mile west of Woodston and Paul lives in Colorado Springs. Walter, Jr., passed away on February 7, 1968, at the age of 54 years. A short time after Walter's death, Vera moved into Woodston where she became active in many affairs of the community and the Methodist church. She taught the Methodist Young Adult Sunday School Class for a number of years. She was also city librarian for several years. She was president of the Woodston High School PTA for several years and was responsible for it being formed. In 1961 Vera married a family friend, John Rarick. They made their home in Woodston. John became active in community affairs, serving on the city council and as mayor for some time. John died August 23, 1974, at the age of 84, and Vera died September 9, 1974, at the age of 85.

C. Dunlap came to Kansas in a covered wagon from a farm near York, Nebraska in 1878. They and their infant son, George Adolphus, homesteaded in Lowell Township about three miles south and two miles west of Woodston. Their first home was a combination dugout and sod house. Next they built a two room limestone house which became their permanent home. In later years a frame extension was added. This was occupied until June 1961 when their son, George, moved into Woodston. The elder Dunlaps moved into Woodston in 1888. Mr. Dunlap had built a store in 1882 or 1883. It was the second store built in Woodston. He sold groceries, drygoods, hardware, furniture and farm implements. (He was also an undertaker.) In 1898 he sold eggs for one cent a dozen but in 1899 they sold for eight cents a dozen. (How's that for inflation?) Butter was ten cents a pound and dressed turkays were six cents a pound. Several years after the store began business J. M. Stehley bought the grocery and dry goods part of the business, but Mr. Dunlap continued the hardware and implements until his death in 1925. Peter Carr Dunlap was born November 17, 1848; died December 23, 1925 at Woodston, Kansas. He married Fedelia Jane Hansel, born 1854; died November 24, 1944 at Seward, Nebraska. Peter and Fedelia were the parents of five sons and a daughter. Their oldest son, George Adolphus was born at York, Nebraska on August 30, 1876; died January 24, 1964 at Woodston. As a young man he went to Missouri Valley, Iowa where he married Myrtle Adeline Frazier, born July 24, 1878 at Missouri Valley; died November 7, 1937 at Woodston, on September 9, 1898. (Myrtle was the daughter of Joseph and Nancy (Lucky) Frazier.) George and Myrtle were the parents of five daughters, all of whom were born at Missouri Valley before they returned to Woodston in March 1910. The oldest, Rosa Viola May, born September 29, 1899, died February 28, 1962 at Woodston. She never married. Grace Jane Dunlap, their second daughter, born January 25, 1901, married Charles Orville Vanderlip on May 14, 1924. He was born at Woodston on January 26, 1902, died July 31, 1969. They adopted one boy, Richard Lee, on May 6, 1938. Their third daughter, Myrtle Maybelle, born March 22, 1903, married Darrell Orval Cunningham on April 29, 1925. He was born at Glade on April 21, 1904, died October 15, 1975 at Phillipsburg. Darrell and Myrtle were the parents of three sons, all born at Glade: Darrell Orval, born February 7, 1927; DeVane Awyn, born March 27, 1929 and Donnie Eldon, born December 10, 1935. George and Myrtle's fourth daughter, Golda Anna, married Perry Russ on July 24, 1930. He was born at Bethany Missouri on December 24, 1908. She was born August 13, 1907. They had no children. Their youngest daughter, Stella Louise, born November 3, 1909; died August 11, 1940, married Robert Edward Russ in 1931. Robert was born at Bethany, Missouri on July 24, 1905. They were parents of a son, Richard Eugene, born October 4, 1933. The second son of Peter and Fedelia, Arthur Carr, born November 23, 1878 at Woodston, died August 1961. He never married. The third son, Earl, was born at Woodston on August 15, 1880 and died in 1957 at Olathe, Colorado. Walter, the fourth son, was born September 23, 1882 at Woodston; died February 14, 1942 at Woodston. He married Vera M. Hadley of Woodston in 1912. She was born May 10, 1889 and died September 9, 1974 at Woodston. Walter and Vera were the parents of three sons, all born at Woodston: Gerald Hadley, Walter and Paul Carr Dunlap. Rosa M. Dunlap, daughter of Peter and Fedelia, was born in Woodston on June 12, 1885, died November 28, 1978. She married Newell McNutt in 1908. He died in 1918. There were no children. She married John DeGrood on September 9, 1931. He was born in Holland and came to the United States with his parents when he was eleven years old. There were no children from this marriage. Freddie Dunlap, youngest child of Peter and Fedelia, was born July 17, 1887 and died on July 18, 1890. A few years after 1890 Peter Carr and Fedelia were divorced and Peter married a second time to Daisy Stannard who came to Kansas from Connecticut with her family. Daisy was born in 1867 and died at Woodston in 1914. Peter Carr and Daisy were the parents of a son and four daughters. Percy Clyde Dunlap was born at Woodston on March 1, 1897. On October 3, 1925 he married Tilda Dodrill, daughter of Isaac James and Emma Elsa (Northrup) Dodrill of Stockton, Kansas. They were married in Prescott, Arizona. Percy Clyde has spent most of his adult life in California where he and Tilda have adopted and raised two girls, Kathryn Jean and Carol Ann, both of whom were born in Los Angeles. Florence Dunlap, the oldest daughter of Daisy and Peter, was born in Woodston on December 12, 1898. She has spent most of her adult life in Colorado. She married 1. John Trueblood. They have one daughter Lydia; 2. Will Green and 3. Harlan Pierce. Vivian, the second daughter of Daisy and Peter, was born in Woodston on December 21, 1900, died 1947, She spent her entire life in Woodston and never married. Elsa May and Elva Fay, twin daughters of Daisy and Peter, were born on November 21, 1907 at Woodston. They have not married and have about divided their time between Woodston, Denver and the Los Angeles area of California. Fedelia Jane Dunlap married a second time to Judd Avery of Woodston. On December 16, 1934, he married Zelma Hoar, daughter of Oscar and Grace Hoar. She was born June 9, 1915, in Osborne. Gerauld and Zelma both graduated from Woodston Rural High School. At the time of their marriage, Gerauld was engaged in farming, and Zelma was employed as an operator with the Woodston Mutual Telephone Co. They moved to a farm in Ash Rock and, in 1946, moved to their present home west of Woodston. Gerauld and Zelma have two children: Donald Lee, born September 19, 1937, and Gloria Kay, born August 31, 1940. Both attended Woodston schools. Lee worked for area farmers and in the oil fields. In 1958 he married Kay Mason, and they had three children: Ricky, Terry, and Dena. Lee and Kay were later divorced. After working several years for the Farmers Union Elevator, Lee started carpenter work and is a combine operator for Bill Jones Custom Cutting. Gloria married Gale Pauley, son of Joe and Chloe Pauley of Woodston, on August 31, 1958. She attended Fort Hays State College for one year, taking a business course, and then worked as a secretary for State Farm until Gale graduated from Fort Hays. They moved to California where Gale taught school for ten years before going into business of his own. They have four children: Melissa, Todd, Gregg, and Scott.

Codell Information Needed There are several former and present students, and people who had ties to Codell that are putting together a Codell Book for the next school reunion to be held Saturday, May 06, 2006. We would like the students name and time period in Codell Schools, (Sample: Janice L. Simpson, Joleen K. Casey and Michael Tucker attended 12 years of school in the Codell Rural Schools together, 1951-1963.) short stories, short family history, memories, memorials, names of graduates as some of the early names were lost in the cyclone era 1918. Not all will be used, but we do need a good list to choose from.
