If there is, is there any way to find old stories on the internet. Thanks Steve Ward Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. >From the June 22, 1934 "Emporia Gazette": Belleville, June 22 (F) — Carl Ward, 20, of Claremore, Okla., died in a hospital here today four hours after both legs had been cut off by a freight train. Ward, who was found by other transients in the railroad yards, was believed to have been en route from Colorado to some point in Missouri to see a girl. The youth was knocked from the train by a switching post. There is also an article in the June 28th Belleville paper, but the image will not come up for me at Newspaperarchives.com Sheryl On Sat, Aug 13, 2011 at 2:59 PM, gc-gateway@rootsweb.com < gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: dyduck821 > Surnames: Ward > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.republic/302/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > My uncle,Carl Oscar Ward, was killed in a train accident in Belleville on > June 22,1934.I was wondering if there was a newspaper in Belleville at that > time that may have had a story about the accident. The "Belleville Telescope" images for 6-28-1934 are still not coming up, but by manipulating the search engine I got this much of the story: Carl Ward, 20, who was fatally under the wheels of the Rock Island's new Red Ball freight, No. ??2, will be buried today in Hominy, Okla. The young man had been spending a bumming vacation, and was returning from Colorado to visit a girl friend in Missouri when he fell as he attempted to board the fast freight in the local yards Friday morning. Both legs were severed above the knees, and he died a few hours later in a Belleville hospital, victim of loss of blood and shock. Other transients heard his cries as he lay beside the track, and they summoned help from the Rock Island yard office. An ambulance was called, and he remained conscious almost until his death. The witnesses stated that he attempted to climb on the freight carrying a box, but the youth believed he was brushed off the freight by a switch. Efforts were begun at once to locate his father, Frank Ward. The fact that the family had moved from the home at Claremore to Hominy since the young man had heard from them delayed the message. They were found Saturday, and the body was sent to Hominy Tuesday. The fast freight (was commissioned?) just a week before it brought his death. It is the Rock Island's new train to carry perishables to the east through the Dotsero cutoff and Moffatt tunnel.
