They were Daniel and Conrad Myers and John W. Cory. Most of the English speaking people who settled there came from New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois. These men made up the Salt Creek Militia that helped repel the Indians in 1864. This group also proposed and helped plan Belleville as the county seat, and established the first school in the county. There are pictures and short family histories of the following: Conrad Myers, Lydia Shafer (wife of Conrad Myers), Maida Myers Hodgins (dau of Conrad and wife of W. E. Hodgins, son of Dr. and Mrs. Wm N. Hodgins of Belleville, KS. The are pictures and short family histories about Daniel Myers and Matilda Bierly Myers and their homestead including building the first log cabin in Republic County, KS.
