This section was homesteaded by R. E. Stenson, John Trimmer, Noah Wood and Wm. Cady. They were assisted by Cerez Smith, Tom Marlett, Ben Pollard and Mr. Hull in cutting the logs from R. T. Stanfield's timber claim on White Rock, and building the log schoolhouse. The first frame house was built by Bob Wood just north of Republic on the farm known as Chimney Mound Farm. Stewart, ------------------ Page 133 Glenn took over the mail carrier route from Jonah Simmons on March 24, 1919. He had 130 boxes with 28 miles of all dirt roads. He used to take a lantern along to put under his lap robe to keep warm. -------------------- Page 169 Nels and Bentina Granstedt Rosene acquired land west of the family home of A. Rosene. They raised the family of one boy Benhard, and nine girls, Lydia, Rose, Mildred. Wendla, Geneva Clara, Sarah, Esther and Florence. George and Esther Rosene Simmons and Bernice lived here until they moved to Belleville. Carl Erickson, the present owner and operator lives in the rock house in 1962. -------------- Page 172 Emerson and Mary Simmons Gritten live on his mother's Pearl Persinger Gritten, farm with Jackie, Kenneth and Duaine, Mr. and Mrs. John Cady on the Nelson farm, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Alien on the Sherdahl homestead, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Hall, descendants of the McQuire, Stenson and Fischer families in section 7-2-4. ---------------------- Dixon, William K. and his wife, Harriet, owned the farm for several years. They were the parents of: Maud (married John Campbell), William K. (married Ruby Williams), Dale (married Vesta Spencer), Alice, Ethel (married Clarence Simmons), Edith and Julian, William K. Dixon was a veteran of the Civil War. Several members of his family also lived in Republic county. Martha Dixon, the wife of Isaac Walton, lived on Sec. 9 Grant Town- ship; their farm was the site of the village of Wayne. Emiline Dixon, the wife of Collins Schrock who homesteaded the W 1/2 of ***** Page 350 the NW 1/4 of Section 12 Lincoln Township. Their children were: Winnie, Laura, Emma (married Clarence McMullin), Bertha (married William Dodge). James Dixon and his sister, Julia Dixon Goldstein bought the John Tey farm after this family decided to return to Illinois. -------------------------- Beth........
