Population in 1961 inducing orway village is 324-a loss of eight. School district No. 32 was organized May 25th, 1871. L. S. Palmer, director; Winfield Scott, clerk; Geo. Miller, treasurer.Pupils were sent to Hungry Hollow school for three or four years before a school house was built. There was no school house there either, but they held school in various places in the district. The first school house was built in 1880 of stone, by George Kackley and according to record, he was paid $130.00. Page 368 --- Dr. Winfield S. Scott was born in Westfield, Indiana, in 1838 He served two tours of medical duty in the army during the Civil War and was married to Christena Gazell Smith in Indiana. There were two daughters Alfarata Moore and Lene Dunlap and four sons Alex, LaRoy, Logan and George. Dr. Scott served this pioneer community until his death in 1916. The following tribute was written by his grandson who is Probate Judge in Belleville, Kansas; "The tall gaunt bearded man in his early thirties eased himself into the clear waters of the Republican River. His rifle and boots were strapped to his pack which he balanced on his shoulder as he grasped his wading stick in his downstream hand. The time was September 20, 1870 and the location was one mile west of the townsite of Norway, Kansas. The man was Winfield Scott, M.D. coming west to file on his claim. He had walked seventy-five miles, in the past two days and the cold water felt good to his bare feet. He was the only physician and surgeon for many miles and he had to travel horseback to his patients." Dr. Alex Scott, Jr. of Junction City is a grandson of Pioneer Dr. W. S. Scott. LaRoy Scott, second son of Dr. W. S. and Gazell Smith Scott was born m a dugout on his father's homestead one and one half miles west and one half mile south of Norway on July 11 1876 Augusta, daughter of G. A. and Selma Larson Anderson was married to LaRoy Scott in 1901. Their only child, Clifford LeRoy was born on his grandparents homestead. He married Madeline Cooney and they have two sons John Winfield and James Winston. Andy Scott, uncle of Dr. W. S. Scott, came west as a young man. He made friends with the Indians and learned their language and lived and trapped with them and bought their skins and furs. Logan Scott, son of Dr. W. S. Scott, and Christena Scott was born on his father's homestead in their dugout home in the side of the hill, not far from the Republican River. He married Anna Buer. They reared one son George and two daughters, Charlotte and Leota. Alex Scott, first born son of Dr. W. S. Scott was born in the dugout home. He married Stella Hay in 1904, Children were Athel, Warren, Dr. Alex, Jr., Helen Howe and Alice Thompson. Continued from page 382 William Joseph Dunlap was born in 1859 the son of Robert Bell Dunlap in Crawford County, Iowa. He married Lene Leoti Scott, daughter of Winfield S. Scott in 1882. Wm. Joseph Dunlap was a carpenter and plasterer by trade. Four sons and one daughter were born to them. Mr. Dunlap died 1918 at Clay Center, Kansas. William Thurston the oldest son was deceased in 1959. Other sons are Ralph B., John Winslow, Bryan A., and one daughter Fern A. Dunlap Walker. Mrs. Wm. J. Dunlap lives in Clay Center. She is. 95 years old. ??? Alfarata Scott, daughter of Dr. Winfield and Christene Gazella Smith Scott, came to Norway twp. with her parents, in 1871. She married Elais V. Moore and they filed a homestead claim in Section 20, along the Republican River. They reared 2 sons, James Andrew and LaRoy Michael. LaRoy and Mildred Kelly Moore own and operate the Riverside farm. It consists of 70 acres, of the harles Rogers homestead and land from the Benjamin Bowley nd Phillip Maher homesteads in Sec. 20 and Sec. 29. Mr. and Mrs. Moore are engaged in general farming and production of registered Hereford cattle. Norway-Dr. Scott's pioneer home, part dugout and part frame. It is on his homestead, N.
