Tate was born iin 1813 in Green County, Tennessee, son of Zachariah Tate and Elizabeth Doan. They moved to Orange County, Indiana. He married Indiana Kemble there in 1836. She died in January 1862. He was distraught and joined the Union Army in February, but was discharged for being too old to serve in June that year. He was in Orange County, Indiana, in 1870, but by 1875 he had homesteaded in Republic County, Kansas, where he is listed on the 1875 Kansas State Census That is the last place I knew he resided. Grant, brother to Preston H Grant and Christina Grant m David McBride. Harvey was married to Mary Jane McBride and I think David McBride was Mary Jane's brother. I have no death info on Mary Jane but I know Harvey died in Lockeridge, Jefferson Co. IA in 1910 (his birthdate is today, Nov. 19, 1835). Their eldest son, Robert E. Grant is my greatgrandfather and he lived in Republic Co, KS with his wife Mary Ann Ginn. Their children were either born in Republic KS or in Nebraska. It appears families migrated together to Republic Co, KS from Iowa. I'd be greatly interested in seeing your photo. I have a book compiled by Diane Clem Hirschi that has pictures of Preston Grant, Pleasant Grant and Wilkinson Grant with his daughters, Emily, Rebecca & Mary Ann and either his wife Christina or his daughter, Christina. Also buried here are his first wife, Esther and son, Lars Elmer. Also found this in the Belleville Telescope (12/19/1918) and thought you would enjoy it: Concordia, Kan., Dec. 14, 1918. Dear Santa Claus : I am a girl seven years old and I want a doll, to.~ and a table , some nuts and candy. My sister, Vivian, wants some dishes, top and a organ, some nuts and candy. My brother Elmer wants a top, tinker toy and some apples, nuts and candy. From a good girl, MILDRED TILLER. I also have a wedding date for Esther Olivia Larson and Lars Tiller as July 18,1910. There are no listings for any births or marriages from this family in Republic. There are other listings of Tillers for burials and marriages, possible relation(?). I hope this helps you in your search. Republic County Historical Society Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. G. being my great great-grandfather. Burials of Carpenters in the Willoughby Cemetery: A.G. Carpenter (Amasa Green Carpenter), born April 6, 1828 either in NY or OH. Died November 17, 1881. His son, Charles Thomas Carpenter, born July 22, 1855 Ohio, died October 4, 1930. His wife, Louisa Melissa Willoughby Carpenter, born Sept. 11, 1850 and died December 14, 1934. They had many sons, four whom are buried in Willoughby cemetery: Mark born 1890, died Dec. 30, 1890; Twin boys, dates unknown; and Charley Carpenter (who is actually named for his father - Charles Thomas Carpenter, Jr. born Jan. 22, 1880 - death unknown, but did live a long life. In the cemetery record of which I retained a copy many decades ago, there is another plot with the name Carpenter, but only this surname is listed - no given name, no dates. Then there is a Larry Dean Carpenter buried next to Louisa, and I have no idea of whom this might be, but it does have the year 1938 listed next to it. Also in this cemetery is another son of A.G. Carpenter, Calvin Luther Carpenter, born 1895 in Ohio, and died Feb. 21, 1922. He married Margaret Haworth and they had a daughter named May whom is buried in this cemetery, I do know when she died from a newspaper account which lists the death in August of 1895 and that she was three years old. For a long time I wondered if the cemetery was named after Louisa Willoughby Carpenter, but later I learned it was named by Henry Willoughby (no relation that I can find so far). He buried his wife their and anyone can be buried there at no cost. Penny Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Calvin first married Margaret/Maggie Haworth. For sure they had daughter May who died as a small child and is buried in Willoughby Cemetery. Then they may have had a son named William Amasa Carpenter. But Maggie and Calvin divorce. Calvin then marries Lillie Springer and they have three children. Of this family, only Calvin is buried in Willoughby Cemetery. I found a Wm. A. Carpenter in the WWI records - living in Oklahoma........and not to be mistaken with a Wm. A. Carpenter of Munden, Kansas. Calvin has a brother named Charles Thomas Carpenter, married to Louisa with several sons. One of the sons is Tarlington Bates Carpenter, my Grandfather.
