Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vm.2ADE/1343 Message Board Post: In 1883, my grgrandfather, Alfred Harmon Smith (b. 1829 in NY ) was a miller in Eureka, and bought into a "large and commodious grist mill at Nickerson", according to the Eureka Herald of 1 Feb 1883. His wife, Anna E. Smith (1834-1911) is listed as one of the purchasers. He rented out the Eureka mill, went "back east" to purchase machinery for the Nickerson mill, and came back to KS with his brother Horace E Smith, owner of a large mill in Brooklyn NY. A partner of his, J.E.Lawther, moved to Nickerson. And I don't have a clue as to what happened to Alfred. His widow shows up in 1911 living with their son in Spokane WA. Any info on Alfred Smith, the mill in Nickerson, or on J.E.Lawther would be greatly appreciated. Aloha from Hawaii.
