On another line I have, which is Elliott, there is someone thinking they are descended from the same ancestor, but the second generation is from the South and no where near where our person is. People just pick up names and claim - without doing enough research. This usually happens when there is something very favorable: Seldom do you see claims to descent when there is anything scandalous attached to the name!. It's fun though, and pleasant when someone like you has a good sense of humor. Nice to communicate with you.

Your information certainly DOES clear up this misconception. An apparently uninformed descendent of George Hall Bunker (Leonard Arthur Bunker's father) told me "our" L. A. Bunker was the benefactor of the library etc. in Hutchinson. Like I said before, I doubted the story because from what I've learned about ole Leonard, he wasn't benefactor to much except, perhaps, the saloon trade! He and his wife briefly, however, DID try homesteading in Kansas--have photo--perhaps that's where the confusion with "your" L. A. Bunker came up. Appreciate your help! Nancy Bunker Bowen

I can't be of much help to you. In 1985, Jim Yust, who at that time lived on a ranch near Kremmling, Colorado published a book on the Yust family that listed all of the descendants of the family known at that time. He states that as far as he knows this is the only Yust family in America. Several years ago we attended a Yust family reunion on his ranch, and over 300 people attended. So, as you can see, it is a very large family. His book has a lot of information about the family, but is not indexed, so it is very difficult to find any particular person. I don't have an address for Jin Yust, but Kremmling is a small town.

Bunker, born 17 March, 1855 in Illinois to David Bunker and Susan Jane Spencer Bunker. David served in the Civil War and later went to Kansas as a wagonmaker for the Haskell Indian Institute. He died at Lawrence, Kansas Oct. 10, 1905. There are still some descendents living in the area. Louis first married Almedia Loretta Andrews and had three children: Marjorie, Harry Slocum (died at birth) and Lloyd R. Marjorie married Mahlon Earnest Newlin. None of these children had any of their own. Louis was divorced and then married Ella Brown in Hutchinson, Kansas. He died while in Long Beach, Calif. on Jan. 3, 1921. He was an Investor and had a lot of land in Hutchinson. Upon his death he left everything to Ella, and when she died she left everything to Louisa Hymer Brown (Peden). There are papers from the Hutchinson, Kansas Library acknowledging the gift from Ella Bunker in Louis's name to set up a book fund - which is still in existence. Louis also did give land to the town, upon which the "Carnegie" Library was built. It is no longer used for that - there is a more modern library and some of the land is that upon which the home that belonged to L.A. and Ella Bunker used to be. Later, Louisa donated an organ to the Methodist Church in memory of Ella Bunker. I have a picture of Louis A. Bunker as does one of his other descendents. However, I do not have a copy of his obituary and although I think he is buried in the cemetery in Hutchinson, Kansas, I do not have proof of that at this time. I am certain that researchers at the Reno County Genealogical Society can look up any newspaper accounts of his death, his contributions to the community, and records of the property he owned. I do have him on several census reports in Hutchinson and Long Beach. Hope this helps with your history - and I do not know who the other L.A. Bunker in Hutchinson could be. I was born there and it was a very small community. Ella Brown had several brothers in business and her mother Louisa had land holdings also. Thanks for replying to my message.

You might be able to clear up some confusion. The Leonard A. Bunker I wrote about was the son of George Hall Bunker and his wife Nancy Fuller, originally from Addison Co. VT. (George was my great grandfather's older brother). Although THIS L. A. Bunker did also live in Hutchinson KS, I wondered whether he was truly the benefactor of the library there, since it does not appear he was ever financially successful enough to be a patron for any community undertaking. Please let me know about "your" L. A. Bunker, so I can add info to my own family notes and rightfully credit the other L. A. Bunker. Thanks for getting in touch, Nancy Bunker Bowen

How are you related? The L.A. Bunker in Hutchinson was married to Ella Brown, my mother's aunt. However, he had a different first name; it was not Leonard. He had been married previously and had three children. Two of them were childless. The first marriage ended in divorce. I have documented proof that this L.A. Bunker was the one who donated the lots and the money for the library, and there is still a book fund in his name at the library. The Bunker Family Association has all the pertinent information about his first marriage, his parents, and his children. I have been trying through them to find one of his descendents, as I have some valuable information for them. The only tracing has been to California. Let me know if you get this since it's been several years since you posted it. I just stumbled across it while searching through the message board.

Following are 1910 and 1920 censuses for Fred ALTSWAGER, indicating that he was a "politician" (1910) and a county auditor (1920) in Reno county. (See census transcriptions at the end of this message.) I am interested in locating ALTSWAGER specifically for the purpose of tracking Dora BONHAM Knapp Altswager. Dora was the widow of Henry KNAPP of southwest Wisconsin, and married Fred sometime before 1920. (Family notes claim their marriage took place Jan 13 or 17 1896 in Wichita, but I haven't pursued documenting that because Fred is listed as single in 1910.) I am most interested in discovering whether/when/where Dora BONHAM Knapp died in/near Reno county. Dora Jane Bonham was born between 1856 & 1857, probably in Wisconsin. (Her age is incorrect in the 1920 census; her birthplace very probably is incorrect, too.) Dora BONHAM and William Henry KNAPP had two daughters: 1. Maude L. Knapp, born 1876-1877 2. Mabel R.
