    1. Where is Sylvia,KS ? Funeral Homes Open in 1887-1890 in Reno Co.?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Frings, Smith Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vm.2ADE/1296 Message Board Post: I have a "mystery relative" who was born in Sylvia,KS 1 Mar 1887. Her name is Bertha Frings. Her father was Godrey Frings. She married one of Smith relatives. OK, I got Bertha's death certificate back this morning and it says: MOTHER UNKNOWN. So what I am figuring is that Bertha's mother died in childbirth in Sylvia, KS which makes more sense than as soon as she had the child, she packed her bags and sneaked out of town under the cover of darkness. Which brings me to my next question. Since it seems more probable that she died there, I am wondering which of the funeral homes in Reno Co. KS would have been in business at that time OR acquired records from that time. And if the records would have been in their files or turned over to a historical society. And I am wondering if Bertha might be buried in Sylvia and whether or not there is an online listing of cemeteries and who is interred there. I sure would appreciate some assistance in finding out what happened to her. If you have information about Godfrey or Bertha Frings OR you are related to them or you have other information about them, PLEASE e-mail me direct at cantorjoeocho2002@yahoo.com or reply to this posting. THANK YOU!

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Anderson, Epperson, Smith, Moore, Myers, Payne Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vm.2ADE/1289.10 Message Board Post: Dr. James Myers Passed Away Early This Morning He was a Pioneer in Reno County and Always a Firm Believer in Her Destiny Dr. James Myers answered the last summons at four o’clock this morning after an illness of ten days during which time he has been unconscious. Coming to Reno county after his retirement as a practicing physician be brought with him faith and home for the town in which he expected to spend the rest of his days. Dr. Myers was born in Trenton, Ohio, on February 25, 1831. He was the fifth child of a family of fifteen, children of whom lived to manhood and womanhood. He studied medicine at Richmond, Ohio and was a practicing physician for 21 years in the states of Illinois, Iowa and Kansas. He joined in the Pikes Peak campaign of 1858 and on his return from Colorado stopped at Highland, Kansas where he was married to Miss Lettie O’Neal in 1860. For a few years he practiced in White cloud in Doniphan county. At this time Kansas was still a territory and Dr. Myers saw the people pass through the terrible border ruffian period. In 1864 he returned to Illinois to visit his parents and remained for a couple of years practicing medicine at Urbana, ILL. In 186 he returned to Highland, Kans., where continued his profession until 1881 when he retired from active work and came to Hutchinson to make his home. An old settler today in speaking of Dr. Myers said: “All the old settlers that knew him know of his wonderful faith and confidence in the county. Not only manifested by his talk but all the acts of his life. He always thought that Reno county, Kansas was as good as any where else, and was never looking for “Green fields in the distance.” His success proves his judgment. “Then dame characteristics were noticeable all through his life. He was a man of strong impulses, of well fixed principles. “nothing wavering.” True first to his own family, true to his relatives and friends, true to his church, and true to his party. You always knew where to find him and how he stood when you did find him. Exceptionally kind hearted it always did him good to help a deserving and needy one.” Dr. Myers was an active member of the Methodist church. He took a great interest in public affairs, always for civic righteousness and in his community was respected for his judgment and hi character. He is survived by four children, Homer Myers of Sylvia, Mrs. Minnie Payne, Mrs. Olive Epperson, Mrs. Alice Smith all of Hutchinson. three brothers and two sisters also survive him. J. A. Myers of this city, Dr. Jonathan Myers of Troy and Albert Myers of Belleville, Mrs. Robert Anderson of Muskogee, Okla., and Mrs. Minnie Moore of Tolona, ILL. The funeral services will be held from the late home on Avenue A east tomorrow afternoon at 3:30. Rev. J. W. Abel of the First Methodist church will conduct the services and interment will be in Eastside cemetery where he will be laid beside his wife who died a few years ago. 1. Rev. John W. Payne obit b: 1829 IN d: 1902 Hutchinson, Reno Co, KS m: 1850 to Polly J. Gray
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Abbott, Glover, Gray, Payne Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vm.2ADE/1289.9 Message Board Post: Funeral Tomorrow Afternoon Rev. John W. Payne Passed Away at His Home in the City this Morning The death of Rev. John W. Wayne occurred at 2 o’clock this morning at his home on Avenue B east, at No. 422. The members of his family, with one exception, were all here watching through the last hours, as it has been known for a week past that his life was near its close. Yesterday it was thought that his condition showed a temporary improvement, and one of his sons, Professor Eli Payne, went to Emporia Expecting to return in a day or two. In the night a sudden turn for the worse came and death followed speedily. John W. Payne was born October 25, 1829, near Bloomington, Ind. He was married early in life, on November 7, 1850, to Polly J. Gray, who survives him. Much of his after life was spent in religious work. He was converted at Old Town Chapel, McLean county, Illinois, February 8, 1858, and was licensed to preach at Williamsburg, Johnson County, Indiana, August 30, 1862. He was ordained at Hutchinson, March 16, 1879. On June 19, 1884, at Holden, Mo., he was badly crippled by a fall and from that time on was never able to walk without the aid of his crutches. In spite of this physical infirmity he continued active in his work for many years. In his religious work he was vigerous and uncompromising declaring his convictions whether popular or unpopular with his auditors. In politics he was a Republican and he always expressed his political views with the same vim and disregard to the opinions of others, that characterized his speech upon religious matters. He was the father of nine children, three sons and six daughters, all of whom are now living active and useful lives and most of whom have been identified with history of Reno county, some of them are educators in the schools. The members of the family are: Miss Pearl Payne, now at home here; Miss May Payne, who is bookkeeper at the P. Martin & Co. store; Miss Laura Payne, teacher of the ninth grade in the High School building; Mrs. Abbott and Mrs. Glover, now of this county, and Chas. N. Payne, who is in business here; Professor Eli Payne of the state normal faculty and Walter Payne of Wichita. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 O’clock from the First M. E. church of which he was a member. It was his wish that Rev. Dr. J. C. Hall of Wellington should preach his funeral and Dr. Hall has been sent for and will arrive tonight. At his request, too, the sermon will be preached from the 13th verse of the third chapter of Proverbs. Hutchinson Daily News No. 86 Vol. XVIL Monday, March 10, 1902 page - 5 column - 4

    1. Subj: City/County directory: Pierre Louis Charles CLERC 1887-1892 (or Le'Clerc?)
    2. Does anyone happen know if a city/county directory exists, or if any other type of publications were available during 1887-1892 such as a farm gazette or business index?  Would someone be able to check those types of records for the surname CLERC for me?  'Yeahs' and 'neahs' are both important to me. In addition, I'm looking for a CLERC marriage and divorce/or wife's death notice during this same time period. And his Declaration of Intention or Naturalization Application.  (Citizenship was filed/granted in Jefferson County Sept 1892) These type of fees were often published in the local newspaper under the Court column.  Pierre Louis Charles CLERC's 1925 Jefferson County, MO obituary reads that he was a well educated Frenchman; immigrated from France; was from an affluential family; and lived in Kansas prior to moving to Jefferson County, MO. Unfortunately it does not explain where he lived in Kansas and 1887-1892 is a poor time frame to try to find a needle in a haystack... He has not turned up in any indexed listing of the 1885 State Kansas Census records (tho I don't anticipate finding him earlier than 1887).  Numerous census records list his immigration year as 1887, and that time period is in agreement with the citizenship papers.  Per the History of Jefferson County, MO, by Litton, it states that Pierre CLERC made and sold an 'excellent stove polish' out of his home.  This 'means' of making a living was something he did in the 1890's (based on his residence at that time vs. his later residence listed in the land/tax records for Hillsboro Poultry Farms). **************************************************** I'm hoping local documentation might be found mentioning an earlier involvement in making/selling this stove polish prior to moving to Jefferson County, MO. ***************************************************** Other info: Per the 1900 - 1926 Jeffco county newspapers on microfilm, there were 6 CLERC products that he manufactured/sold at his 'factory' (called Hillsboro Poultry Farms): Clerc's Specific Clerc's Clerc's Chicken-Lice Killer Clerc's Egg Producer Clerc's Chicken Food Clerc's Condition Powders Clerc's Disinfectant Insect Powder ***************************************************** Citizenship/Naturalization/Declaration of Intent: ***************************************************** His citizenship record was applied for (exact date unknown, but at least 2 years prior to...) and granted Sept 18, 1892, in Jefferson County, MO.  Julius DuFOUR and Eugene HEYLIGERS (Heilgers?) were witnesses.  Julius Dufour, born 1844, is listed in various county census records: 1860 (STE GENEVIEVE, MO), 1870 (Randolph County, IL), (1880/1900 - ?) and 1910-20 (STE GENEVIEVE, MO); and a Eugene HEILGER is listed under property transfers in Jefferson County, MO (1910, I believe). I've been unable to find the naturalization record or declaration of intent for Pierre CLERC, which would help provide answers as to CLERC's birthtown or anyone he may have immigrated with. His 'German' brother-in-law, Albert Joseph UMHOEFER's, Declaration of Intention was recorded in St. Louis, MO, but CLERC's isn't there.  ****************************************************** Marriage/Wife's Death Notice or Divorce Notice : ****************************************************** It seems that Pierre CLERC was married prior to his Jefferson County marriage in 1892; whether that first marriage ended in death or divorce, I'm not sure.  There could be a death notice for his first wife during this time period or a divorce notice in the locally published court records (1887-1892).  (His second marriage (mid-1892) to Anna UMHOEFER ended in a divorce (denied in Jeffco, but later a change of venue was granted to St. Genevieve, MO).  A week after the divorce was granted (1920) in St. Genevieve, he remarried in Jefferson County.) I've been searching for these missing CLERC records for 7 years -and counting! Any help will be greatly appreciated.  I have several books for Jefferson County and will be happy to reciprocate the kindness with any lookups in that area. Since I'm not a regular subscriber to this board, please email me directly at: MehdiFakhar@aol.com Thank You for helping!  -Kay Clerc-Fakhar, FL

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: BIRD Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vm.2ADE/1291 Message Board Post: I am seeking information on James Bird, b: Dec 20, 1838 Guernsey County, Ohio, d: Aft 1893, probably in Jasper County, Missouri, his wife, Nancy E. (Smith) Bird, and their children, Julia A. Bird, b: @ 1869, and Joseph C. Bird, b: @ 1873. Joseph was the son of Joseph Bird and Sarah Ann (Roberts) Bird of Guernsey County, Ohio. James might have been married first, prior to 1867, to a Mary Hocking. It is unknonw how this marriage ended. 1870 US Federal Census places James, Nancy and their first child in Noble County, Ohio. Sometime after 1873, James moves his family. 1880 US Federal Census finds them living in District 55 of Preston in Jasper County, Missouri. From statements he made in affidavits concerning his brothers military pension, we know that in 1881 James is living in Jasper County, Missouri and is still there in 1889. And in 1893, James lived in Dublin, Missouri, one mile from Jasper, Jasper County, Missouri. Sometime after 1893, it is assumed that James dies, but this is not proven because Nancy is found in 1910 living in Nickerson City, Reno County, Kansas. It is desigmated that she is married even though there is no husband listed in the household at the time the census is taken. Julia and Joseph are no longer in the household, but there is another child, William H., age 28, which would have puthis birth date ar 1881 or 1882. Any information that you may have on this family and their descendants would be very appreciated.
