Hello Listers, I am doing research on my Weaver line. I learned from the 1920 U.S., Reno County, Census that a LEDFORD W. WEAVER, was in prison in the reformatory in Reno County. Dose anyone know whether and where I can get a copy of Ledford's prison record, and maybe the charge he was tried on, and in Which Kansas County he was tried? Thank you. Don, OK dhweav@gbronline.com

I was requested to forward this query. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: non-member posting Date: Fri, 29 Apr 2005 15:10:03 í From: Bruce McDowall <Bruce_McDowall@huntsman.com> To: KSRENO-admin@rootsweb.com Hello list, In the course of searching for a 'lost branch' of my tree, I looked for Scottish born McDOWELLs in the 1880 census for Kansas. (From my grandfather's bible, I knew he visited there from 1881 to 1884.) I did manage to find my John McDOWELL in Chase Co, but the following three neighbouring households in Reno Co had me intrigued, so I've done some further research on them. They have no known connection to my family, but I'm posting this here for the sake of anyone who is connected to these people. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vm.2ADE/1343 Message Board Post: In 1883, my grgrandfather, Alfred Harmon Smith (b. 1829 in NY ) was a miller in Eureka, and bought into a "large and commodious grist mill at Nickerson", according to the Eureka Herald of 1 Feb 1883. His wife, Anna E. Smith (1834-1911) is listed as one of the purchasers. He rented out the Eureka mill, went "back east" to purchase machinery for the Nickerson mill, and came back to KS with his brother Horace E Smith, owner of a large mill in Brooklyn NY. A partner of his, J.E.Lawther, moved to Nickerson. And I don't have a clue as to what happened to Alfred. His widow shows up in 1911 living with their son in Spokane WA. Any info on Alfred Smith, the mill in Nickerson, or on J.E.Lawther would be greatly appreciated. Aloha from Hawaii.

Those individuals looking for information on family members who worked for railroads may be able to get information from the Railroad Retirement Board. This agency maintains records on employees of the railroad throughout the country. You can get further information about obtaining records at http://www.rrb.gov/geneal.html The family member does not have to necessarily retired from the railroad. I got information on my Grandfather who had retired from the railroad and also about my father who worked only a few years for the railroad. They sent me copies of all the records they had on both of these people. Hope this helps and good luck with your search. Sharon

I didn't find his name on the S.S. death info. He died in 1962, After this post I made about the records are in a salt mine in Reno, I did right to the S.S. records Dept. giving them my Uncle's name and his railroad number and I do hope they find something on him. I don't know what railroad my Uncle worked for but I do know he died in the Missouri Pacific Hospital in St. Louis Coity, MO. I thought maybe he worked for the Missouri Pacific Railrod which is now Union Pacific and Union told me unless I had a reg. today's S.S. number they could not help me at all and they also check for him by name and have no info on him. My Uncle was just ready to retire and died before he put in for it. So he never drew any benifits. I don'r know what he did for the railroad either I was just a child then, but proud that he worked for a railroad and would like to know which one at least. Since I'm working on my family tree and his sister my Ggrandmother died age 22 all my LANE line info has been lost. Thank You for your reply. Theresa
