Dr. C. E. V. Sams, died early Sunday morning just a week after she had suffered a paralytic stroke. Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday morning at ten o’clock, with the Rev. Gurtner of the Methodist church in charge of the services. Zeph Fisher sang a solo, accompanied by Mrs. Ash, and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Dick also sang a number. The body was laid to rest in the beautiful mausoleum in Fairlawn cemetery in Hutchinson. The Graham morticians were in charge of the body. Mrs. Sams had been in poor health for many years, but during the past winter had been much better. The paralytic stroke came as a surprise to her husband, who had taken care of her during her illness. She was conscious for several days after the stroke, but gradually grew weaker. Mrs. Sams was born in St. Louis county, Missouri. She had lived in Haven since her marriage to Dr. Sams in 1896. They were married at his mother’s home in Kansas City. During the years she has been a wonderful helpmate and companion to the doctor. He is the only surviving relative in this part of the country. Twenty-seven years ago they built the fine home where she has lived and were she died. Found Dead in Chair at Office Body Discovered by Mrs. H. E. Borntrager; Was Last Seen Alive About 10:30 Tuesday Dr. C. E. V. Sams was found dead in his chair Thursday morning about 11:30 when Mrs. H. E. Borntrager called at his office for medical supplies. It is supposed that he had been dead for some time as he was sitting in his chair with the Tuesday morning News-Herald in one hand and his pipe in the other. Dr. Sams had seemed to be in good health as nearly every morning and evening he could be found in the yard at his home mowing grass, pruning trees, shrubs or working with his flowers. The cause of death was a heart attack. Dr. Sams came here as a young man 50 years ago in 1894 to practice medicine and has been on the job every since that time. Arrangements for the funeral and burial had not been made at press time, but it is presumed that it will be as early as possible as the condition of the body did not warrant delay. Burial will be made in Hutchinson in a mausoleum beside the body of his wife who passed away five years ago. As the good doctor has said to the writer on occasions, “there’ll be a lot of people miss Ol’ Doc when he’s gone,” and no doubt he spoke the truth. John Lueck, an industrous young German who was recently married to Miss Carrie Zimmerman, of this city, was instantly killed by lightning at his home fourteen miles north of Hutchinson, about 11 o’clock Sunday evening during the thunderstorm. Mrs. Lueck had retired and her husband was seated near the bedside, while his mother was attending to some household matters in another part of the room when the summons came. Mrs. Lueck heard the chimney crash on the roof when she called to her husband. Receiving no response the wife went to her husband and found that he was dead. He never spoke nor moved after the fatal shock. Neither of the ladies were injured and the only evidence of the thunderbolt about the building was the demolishing of the chimney. The deceased was an honest industrious young man. The young widow is bowed down with grief and receives the sympathy of everyone.
