Hi, I checked the Reno County Cemetery Records and found a Thomas W. McGinn, born 28 August 1883 and died 29 April 1956 and buried in the Hutchinson Eastside Cemetery. I checked for Ethel under the named McGinn, Sames, and James and did not find her. If this helps and you want me to search further, let me know. Thomas served as undersheriff several times and was chief of detectives during the A. Lewis Oswald administration. Is it really Sames or is it James. This info came from an obit in the paper. I believe 1956. Does anyone know of this McGinn or of Ethel Sames McGinn? > Would really like to find out more info as I have McGinn family in area but cannot get a connection as yet. >

She didn't often put even her first initial on a lot of her negatives, only used the last name, and she rarely put any date on them. Most were not identified at all as to subject content, individual places, or people. Some of the pictures were sad, photos of deceased loved ones who were carefully laid out in black on a satin coverlet, with flowers around them, apparently some just prior to being placed in their coffin. The most touching ones were of children. Ms. Bailey took a lot of pictures in the south end of town, around Carey Park where people went to the river to boat or picnic, near the Hutchinson Correctional Facility (known as the Reformatory), and she took a lot of pictures of local buildings and houses, both with and without people present. She photographed nice, new houses owned by well-to-do or well-placed community citizens, and also photographed homes in the poorer sections of town. There were even a few pictures of the Kansas State Fairgrounds when the fair was held on East Avenue G before moving to its current location.

Sounds like they must have run the studio in their home. I will check with the historical society and see what I can find about them. So glad you saw my query. Lois

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vm.2ADE/710.1.1.1 Message Board Post: There were hundreds of those negatives. Someone locally (he is now deceased) purchased trunks and boxes and crates of them from an estate auction, and disposed of all the broken ones and the ones that offended him (I gather that some were of nude people, too). I ran a some prints from them but they didn't turn out well since I was in a hurry to return the negatives to my ex. The silver was coming off some of them, others were cracked, and if these were the best of what was available from the estate auction, they weren't very well cared for. The historical society made copies of everything I had at the time, and it was very hard to identify what buildings and people were in the photos, since nothing was marked. I spent 6 months driving around town trying to match up pictures with the houses that are left; found one that had been photographed as a single-story dwelling and it has now had a 2nd floor added. When I was done with them, I stacked them into a box with a sheet of newsprint between them and returned them to my ex. My ex runs Broker's Antiques in Hutchinson, but it has been at least 10 years since he had any of them to my knowledge, and he had a buyer for the ones I knew of at the time. You'd have to check around with some of the antique shops to see if there are any left.
