It still exists too. It's a very small town. My husbands Varney family lived in Windom (formerly Laura), McPherson County, KS. I understand that at one time there were two different Varney families there. It might be interesting to note that Saxman (Rice Co.) and Windom (McPherson Co.) are not very far apart. Actually, the Santa Fe Trail runs between the two locations. I don't show your Miles Standish Varney in my tree. However, if you answer me privately, and if you are interested, I can send you what I do have on the Varney's in that location. Ann southwind333@yahoo.com

Surnames: Smith, Slavens Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Vm.2ADE/1059 Message Board Post: Family history has it that John Oscar Slavens, b. March 2, 1858 in Pike County, Ohio, ended up in Hutchinson, Kansas, using the name J.O. Smith. Smith was the proprietor of a gun shop and was killed in a robbery on May 3, 1932. Stories from the Hutchinson newspapers on the murder can be found at http://www.slavens.net/misc/john_slavens_shooting.htm I have the newspaper films on loan at the moment and am searching for confirmation that Smith was Slavens. There's no obituary in the papers, just a brief mention about services. I'll keep looking to see if anything came out in the murderer's trial. Are the Johnson funeral home records available anywhere? I suspect that if they exist they may confirm the Smith/Slavens connection. The death certificate should be available, and I'll give that a try too. Anyone have any other suggestions where to look for confirmation? According to the stories, Smith had a son Paul, 44, and granddaughter Margaret, 18, at the time of his death. Thanks!

Know she is buried there, but don't exactly know what year (1880-1900) or whether she even has a headstone... She may be next to her grandchildren K. Black & Hattie Black (1875-1880). I also have unconfirmed info that Lourinda was listed on the 1895 Reno County Census in the household of son-in-law, Clinton Black, Bell Twp. If at all possible I would like verification... THANKS.

I have just about given up on my Great grandmother's side of the family. Every where I turned, I hit a brick wall. I had that Bessie's mother was Effie (?) as listed on her death record, but no last name. Her father was listed as William McDarmett. So the spelling of the last name was listed a few different ways. Anything that you can share, would be very appreciated. Again, Thank You, Linda Reynolds--linsry@hotmail.com
