    1. [KSReno] KS Family Group Sheets
    2. Gen
    3. Hello, I'm happy to announce a new Special Project, the Kansas Family Group Sheet (FGS) project. It's my privilege to be managing it, and I hope to be very busy adding family group sheets submitted by all of you. The URL for the page is http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/kansas/ . I think you'll find the page easy to read and use, but if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. The USFGS home page (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/) links to all the states. I hope you'll take advantage of this new project. Those of us who have been working to bring it to Kansas are very excited about its possibilities. Any family group that lived in Kansas, even for a short time, can be posted. THE ONLY PERSONS WHO CANNOT BE POSTED ARE THOSE WHO ARE LIVING. Each family group sheet provides space for basic information about father, mother, and children; so if you only know about one family unit, you know enough to put the information up. If you know more, you can add more family group sheets: the father's parents and siblings, the mother's parents and siblings, the children's spouses and children, and on and on. If you've traced the family into other states, you can post your group sheet in those states as well as Kansas. But just one family sheet in one state can be enough to make new and exciting connections. We've prepared the pages and forms, added search engines and links, and now it's in your hands. Send in your family group sheets. One a day, one a week, whatever works for you. Tell your fellow researchers about the site. Talk about it at your next genealogical society meeting. Mention it in your emails. The more people hear about the site, the more contributions we're likely to get; and the more contributions we receive, the more valuable the project is going to be. I'll be waiting for your family to turn up in my mailbox! Charles Barnum, KS FGS manager I started my genealogy research in Kansas about 40 years ago.

    1. [KSReno] RUDESILL Family Letters
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" a group of family letters all written to Henry M. RUDESILL in Lawrence, Kansas or Oberlin, Ohio by his Mother and Aunt in Hutchinson, Kansas. The letters all appear to have been written in the 1890's. Here are some of the clues found in the letters: -Henry appears to have been a student at the time the letters were written -Henry plays piano -Henry is at school with Jake and travels home with Jake on occasion -Henry also writes letters to John, Netta, and Aunt -Henry rents a room in Oberlin, OH from Mrs. KENNEDY -Helen D. visited Henry in Oberlin, OH -Helen travels from Wadsworth to Sharon -Fred picked up Helen when she arrived in Wadsworth -Helen will go to Winnie's -Helen also lives in Hutchinson, KS -Helen will bring Roy home with her when she returns on her trip -Helen was also visiting in Bradford -Henry's Father has sent Helen money (leads me to believe that this Helen is Henry's sister) -Helen is single -Henry's parents live across from the BALLARD family in Hutchinson, KS -Aunt Frank spends time at the Christian Science Home on North Main -Henry's parents own a store, may be at 221 Fifth East -Aunt Hettie might secure students for Henry in the NW (believe he would teach music) -Aunt Frank went to the Remeny's Concert with Arthur SEVERANCE -Cousin John is ill -Henry's Father travels to Rock Island on business -Don't believe that Kansas in Henry's Mother's home as she speaks often of being homesick Other misc. info in the letters includes: -Mr. & Mrs. SPRINGER are living at Dodge City and own land in Reno County, their son Ed lives in Hutchinson -Henry's parents rent a home from Mr. BEREY in Hutchinson, KS -Henry's Mother plans to inherit furniture belonging to Mrs. Dr. MCDANIELS -Mrs. Fanny NORTH BENNETT calls on Henry's Mother in Hutchinson, KS -Ollie HERYER is visiting in Lyons -Mrs. WALL and Mrs. BRIGGS started on Monday (music lessons maybe) -Ethel D. arrived in Santa B, very brave to go all that way on her own (could it be Santa Barbara, California) -Much take about musicale at Mrs. DUVAL's home with many single women in attendance including; Minnie & Sadie EASTMAN; Adeline DUPLER; Dora DUVAL; Stella SMITH; and Miss WHITE (Henry's cousin) -Two SHEARS families are returning to Hutchinson, KS, causing Mr. JONES to move, likely into the old DODDS place just below the SEVERANCE place -Frank MYKRANTZ is coming to Ashland, OH -Miss Nina LEONARD visits with Miss SPAULDING often -Gilmore's Band is playing in Hutchinson, KS -The dog follows Bert SEVERANCE's boys to the store all the time I'm hoping that there is a connection somewhere in all of these clues. I'm hoping to locate someone from the family so that these precious letters from Mother to son and from Aunt to a favorite nephew can be returned to the family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [KSReno] Fairview/East Star (?) Cemeteries, Reno Co., KS
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Williams, Maxwell, Riley Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vm.2ADE/1080 Message Board Post: I have recently discovered a contract dated 4/4/1903 for perpetual care of Lot No. 53 South 1/2 between the Fair View Cemetery Association (the raised seal reads Fairview), Reno County, KS, and my great grandfather, Nathan Edgar ("N.E.") Williams. He died 22 years later on 1/6/1926, his wife died in 1935, and all three of his children long outlived their parents. Is there any way, short of traveling from my home in Washington, DC, to Reno County, to find out who is buried in that plot? I suspect that it might be N.E.'s father, Jonathan A. Williams, whose date and place of death I do not know; or maybe it is one of N.E.'s parents-in-law, Lutetia Riley Maxwell (d. in Hutchinson on 3/6/1902) or Jeremiah Maxwell (d. in Hutchinson 4/5/1899). I do not have burial places for either of them. In 1900 Jonathan Williams was living with one of his daughters in Stuart, Guthrie Co., IA, but I cannot find him in any 1910 census. The death certificate for N.E.'s wife, Nancy Eleanor Maxwell Williams, appears to read that she was buried at "East Star" Cemetery in Reno County on 3/27/1935, but I do not find it listed among the cemeteries in Reno County. Does such a place exist, or should I be deciphering the certificate to read East Side Cemetery? N.E. died while on a trip to visit a daughter in Columbus, KS, and his death certificate does not state where he was buried. Could he also be in East Star/East Side with his wife?

I was told by my husband's uncle that she drowned at age 105 when she fell out of a canoe. And yes, I believe she was the oldest child. The next child was Walter William (12/28/1889 - 3/1973). Then Edgar (and I have the same dates you do), followed by Forrest Alvin (8/8/1898 - 10/13/1979). Most of my family history info is on another computer, and I won't be able to get to it for a few weeks. In the meantime, please have Sean email me .... my husband would love to make a connection with any of his kin. Thanks, Jan Whiteacre

His ggrandparents are George William Whiteacre born abt 1863 in ( we believe ) Casey County, KY and Francena Louisa Grandon. We know that George and Francena had 2 other children besides Walter William. Their other two was a daughter named Onandas (Whiteacre) Scott, and a son named Edgar George Whiteacre, Sean's grandfather. We think Onandas was older than Edgar. Edgar was born on Oct. 7, 1893 in Wichita County, TX and married Edna Frances Mays. George and Francena are buried in Fairview Cemetery in Denison, TX. Edna died abt 1948/49 we are not sure. Edgar died in Nov. 1962 in New Mexico. We think we found George with his parents in Kentucky because in the 1930 Census it says that he was born in KY and so was his parents. His parents were Alexander born abt 1844 in KY and Sciohta Hargis born abt 1846 in Pulaski County, KY. thanks Charles G. Ballard P.S. this is for Annette, where did you find George and Louisa's marriage licence. P.S.S.If anyone has any questions we will be glad to answer them if we can. Daniel died there in 1884 and is buried in the Hutchinson, Eastside Cemetery. His wife, Catherine remarried a Dougal McArthur and he is also buried there. From there they went up into Washington and Idaho. I believe the one son John married there somewhere. All had the middle name of Stalker as this was Catherine's maiden name.
