    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vm.2ADE/1184.2.1 Message Board Post: I now have a book book on the first 100 years of Buhler Kansas by Rhonda Hiebert that may answer my question. It appears that in the early 1500's the Mennonites were being persecuted in the Netherlands and moved to Prussia where they were well treated and prospered until 1780's when the Prussians became less benovelent so they packed up and moved to Russia's Ukraine and "Chortitza" where Catherine the Great offered them the land to establish their own Germanic colonies. But by 1870 there was pressure on these peaceful people to serve in the Russian army so they largely immigrated to the United States. I guess that in all this moving around they sort of lost their Dutch connection.

Bair (or Blair) who married Nancy A. Young in Wilson, KS 16 SEP 1874. 1880 Census for Partridge, Reno, KS lists Nancy with their (only?) daughter Ida J. Bair. John may have died by this point. Family legend has it that John's ancestry is Native American. The only thing I've found of John or Nancy is their names on their daughter's marriage register and the mention of their place/date of wedding at LDS website's IGI database. Ida J. Bair (Blair) married William Harrison Smith on 17 MAR 1891 in Partridge, Reno, KS Any further information greatly appreciated!

    1. [KSReno] Reed-Wright Scioto Co., OH coincedences
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: REED, WRIGHT, GUY, SCHISLER, BROWNLEE Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vm.2ADE/497.530.1 Message Board Post: I was looking for Mrs. Mary Reed who married Benjamin Schisler 3 Dec 1893 in Reno Co. KS...She was b. Aug 1836 in PA and had 3 children with Mr. Reed, 2 living in 1900. I have no idea who they are. Mary was Benjamin's 2nd wife and I'd hoped to find out more about her. Your message caught my eye for several reasons--not quite because of Mary! It's kind of complicated but I hope this is somehow relevant to your message! Benjamin's son, Jesse Schisler, married Cora Guy. Cora's dad, Enoch Guy was the son of Mary Jane WRIGHT (b. 14 Sept 1815, VA) and Alfred GUY (b. 10 Oct 1810, NC). On 7 Sept 1854, Enoch GUY's sister, Harriett, married Walter Brownlee in Portsmouth, Scioto, OH. They lived across the river in Lewis Co., KY. In 1860, they are in the Doniphan Co., KS census, living nextdoor to the S. J. REED family--S. J. was b. abt. 1810 in Ohio, his wife, Emily was also b. abt. 1810 in Ohio, and so was son Jesse, 17. James, 14, A. J., 11, Emily 7, were born in MO and Perry, 5 was born in Cal. Susanna RIGHT, 16, b. KY, daughter of Minerva/Mary WRIGHT is living in the REED household as a domestic. In the 1870 census, Minerva WRIGHT is living in Enoch's household so I think she might be his aunt. I have never found her husband's first name. She is also in the 1850 Lewis Co., KY census. I might be mistaken, but the Martins may have been mentioned in connection with the Reeds in Reno Co., KS. I have a David Martin, 28, OH and Sarah Martin, 21, OH living next-door to the Reeds in 1860 Doniphan Co., KS. I just thought that these Reed/Wright connections near & in Scioto Co., OH (and sort of a Reno Co, KS connection to boot!) were interesting and hoped you might know something about S.J? Thanks for your time! Susan

Maybe that other response you received explains how that misnaming happened! We have the same problem in the line I'm tracing. I'm finding German instead of Dutch in a Pennsylvania Dutch family. It corresponds with what I just mentioned but confused me until I finally read that tidbit. Susan

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vm.2ADE/1184.1 Message Board Post: My grandfather was also German but died young leaving my english grandmother. She lived with her husband and parents for awhile and had many expressions from that family including: "You're speaking 'Dutch'!" "Don't be Deutsch sprechen!" "Das ist heis!" "Du bist ein dumbkopf!" I also wondered before we did the geneology if they could have been dutch but now believe that "dutch" in Central Kansas among the immigrants was an anglicized version of "Deutsch". During the first world war, it was illegal to speak german in public or on the telephone in some states. Iowa had such a law. And in any event it was not approved of. I think that the first two expressions from above, stem from that time. My German families come from Harper County around Freeport, KS.
