(see) -Wales>Montana>Ks emig 1855 yes -He emigrated to the United States in 1855. He settled in Youngstown, OH for 2 years prior to moving to Kentucky in 1857. The following year, he traveled to Little Stranger, Leavenworth Co., KS. In the spring of 1859, he went to Wabaunsee Co., near Wamego, and filed a land warrant. On 5-2-1859, he joined a Pikes Peak gold expedition. He had to pay his share of $40 and drive a team of oxen across the plains.When he arrived in Denver, he met up with some old friends. They convinced him that the gold expedition was a "humbug" so he turned around and went back home.His next trip took him to Emporia in August 1859 and then on to Burlingame where he worked on opening a coal drift for Joe Marple. After becoming ill, he quit and walked back to Leavenworth. An old friend happened along and convinced him to travel to St. Louis with him. Lewis labored in coal mining there until after the Civil War. -In March 1866, he took a steamboat for Fort Benton, MT. It cost him $140 for cabin passage and he arrived there on 7-1-1866. Upon arriving, he traveled to Helena and then onto Virginia City where he mined for gold. In September 1869, he traveled to Lawrence, KS via Ogden, UT, Omaha, NE, and St. Joseph, MO. After arriving in Lawrence, he sent his gold dust to the US Mint and he earned $6000. -While he was in Lawrence, he heard about the Welsh colony at Arvonia. While traveling through Osage and Lyon county, he thought about getting into the stock business. Once he arrived in Arvonia, he bought the supply store and eventually built a new store room across the street. He also kept the Post Office and had the only store in town for about a year. About 3 years later, he bought out the hardware stock of E.W. Burton & Johnson. -1895 Arvonia farmer -He was one of the leading men in Arvonia. -He bought out James A. Whitaker's store in Walnut Hall in 1870 and built his own store. It was a 2-story building. -He served as a banker, postmaster, on the Township board and the treasurer. -He would rather spend money on others than himself. -The Arvonia school was held in the 2nd story of his store sometime in the years of 1870-1871. -In 1871, the Methodist church met in the 2nd story of his store. *C.R. He later attended Stricklers Business School in Topeka. -He was in the ranching business all his life. He joined the KS Livestock Assoc in 1947 and had been a member of the Texas Southwestern Cattle Ranchers Assoc since 1954. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Assoc and a charter member of the Texas Game Warden Assoc of Conservation for Future Generations. He was a life member of the Republican Party and the Lebo United Methodist Church. He served on the Board of Directors of the Osage City Country Club. He served on the Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center Board of Directors from 1985 until 1995. -Among his many generous contributions, he provided scholarships at Emporia State University for the handicapped, as well as scholarships for young people in Coffey, Lyon and Osage counties. He has helped people in nursing homes who could not afford to stay.
