The Journal Free Press Wednesday October 18, 1944 Mrs. Robert DUNCAN had a very interesting letter recently from her husband, Sgt. Robert Duncan, who is serving with General Patton's army overseas. The letter in part follows: "You would really be surprised if you could see this country over here. It is really pretty in a way. Of course, but we are not adding to its beauty at this time by any means. By the way the country has been divided up into small fields with the house, barn, chicken coop, etc., massed in a small group inclosed by a stone wall. One can readily see things have been very well taken care of. The people are sort of quaint, I shall say, but the most of them wear wooden shoes and simple made clothes and the women work as much as the men if not more. The threshing machines are very much out of date and I have seen them beat out the grain over a barrel. It is all worth seeing but I would rather be in the good old USA." He also state he was receiving the Free Press and enjoyed it very much.
