The Enterprise-Chronicle Osage County June 27, 1940 Crum--Ellis Wedding In Topeka, Sunday. A wedding that came somewhat as a surprise to friends in Burlingame was that of Miss Catherine CRUM of Lyndon to Mr. Richard ELLIS of Burlingame which was solemnized at the home of Dr. Ormal L. Miller, pastor of the First Methodist church of Topeka, with Dr. Miller officiating at 3:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, June 23. The bride wore a green traveling suit with white accessories, and carried an arm bouquet of roses. The couple was attended by Mr. and Mrs. John Bessant, intimate friends. Others present at the ceremony were Miss Stella Crum, a sister of the bride, and Miss Edyth Larson. Following the ceremony a dinner was served to the bridal party at the Norman Cafe. Miss Crum was born in Lyndon, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Crum, and is a graduate of the Lyndon high school. She attended Emporia State Teachers College two years, completing the teachers course, and taught in the Burlingame schools one year. The past year she has been taking a business course at Strickland's Business College in Topeka and plans to complete her course. Mr. Ellis, known to all his freinds as "Dick", is a Burlingame boy, born and reared here. He completed high schol here with the class of 1931. Even before finishing school he worked for the Oliver Grocery, and for several years afterward. For the past two years he has been employed in the Thew Drug Store and will continue his work there.
The Enterprise-Chronicle Osage County Thursday June 20, 1940 Mrs. Ella Smith Dies Suddenly. Funeral services for Mrs. Ella SMITH, 77, were held in the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, June 19, at 2:30 o'clock. The service was conducted by the pastor, Lawrence Almond, and burial was made in the Burlingame cemetery. Mrs. Smith had been in poor health for several years, suffering from heart trouble, and death came as she slept on Saturday night, June 15. Since her condition had been much improved of late, the news of her sudden death came as surprise to family and friends. Mrs. Smith had spent the winter in the home of her niece, Mrs. Howard SHIRK, in Topeka and had only returned to her home in this city ten days ago. Ella Leota MORGAN, was born in Zanesville, Ohio, March 15, 1863. She was one of seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. A.O. Morgan who located in Burlingame in an early day when Mr. Morgan became engaged in the manufacture of brick and tile. Her married to William C. SMITH took place at Lyndon on November 20, 1884. His death occurred February 22, 1927. Mrs. Smith is survived by one brother, Samuel C. MORGAN, and one sister, Mrs. Olla V. WELSH and several neices and nephews. As a wife she made her home a place of cheer and comfort. Her kindly countenance, affectionate disposition and thoughtful consideration for the happiness of all have rendered her dear to those whose pathway she has made bright. Same Newspaper: June 27, 1940 Through an error in the obituary of Mrs. Ella SMITH, published in the Enterprise-Chronicle last week, her parents were given as Mr. and Mrs. A.O. MORGAN instead of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. MORGAN. A.O. MORGAN was an uncle of Mrs. SMITH.
The Enterprise-Chronicle Osage County Thursday June 13, 1940 Nicolay--Peterson Wedding in Topeka. The marriage of Miss Aileen NICOLAY, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O.W. Nicolay of Topeka and Mr. Ralph PETERSON of Osage City, took place Monday afternoon, June 10, at 2:30 o'clock at the Bethel Mission parsonage in Topeka. The Rev. F.O. Kling officiated. The attendants were Miss Audrey Nicolay and Renold Nicolay, sister and brother of the bride. The bride is a relatives of Mrs. August Barness of this locality and Miss Audrey Nicolay has been the teacher at Superior school for the past two or three years. The bride wore a delft blue dress with white straw hat and other white accessories. Mrs. Peterson is a prominent young farmer near Osage City. He and his bride have taken a honeymoon trip to the Ozarks. (Note: Typed as printed in newspaper.)

The Enterprise-Chronicle Osage County Thursday June 6, 1940 Former Resident Here Dies At Wakarusa. Funeral services for Mrs. Don COFFMAN, 69, of Wakarusa, were held at Penwell's Funeral Home in Topeka, Tuesday afternoon, June 4, at 2:30 o'clock with burial in Topeka cemetery. Mrs. Coffman was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John HALL who lived for many years on a farm two miles north of Burlingame, now owned by C.F. Fox. The entire family was well known and socially prominent in Burlingame during the residence here. Mrs. Coffman was born November 11, 1870, at Marshaltown, Iowa, and came to Kansas in a covered wagon with her parents when five years of age, locating at Burlingame. Since her marriage to Don Coffman she had lived in Wakarusa, where they conducted a general store. Mr and Mrs. Coffman celebrated their golden wedding in February, 1939. Her death occurred Sunday, June 8, in a Topeka hospital, after an illness of several weeks. Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Philip COZIER, Wakarusa; two sons, Don COFFMAN, jr., Wakarusa, and Harry Coffman, Holton; four sisters, Mrs. Emma HOOVER, Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Bess HENDERSON, Golden, Colo.; Mrs. Maude SUMMERS, Inglewood, Colo.; and Mrs. Kate MABON, Topeka; three brothers, Robert J. HALL, Topeka, James and Harry Hall, of Oklahoma; and four grandchildren.

The Enterprise-Chronicle Osage County Thursday May 23, 1940 Announces Candidacy For Superintendent. In a formal announcement this week, O.H. THOMAS, popular and capable superintendent of public instruction advises that he is a candidate for reelection of that office. Long service as head of the school department of county government attests the faith and confidence in which he is held by the people of the county who have repeatedly returned him to the position with large majorities or without opposition. Outside of his official duties, Superintendent Thomas takes an active part in the Boy Scout organization of the county and for serveral years has been chairman of the court of honor committee.

BERRY will arrive in Burlingame from Daytona Beach, Fla., next week with the ashes of his wife for interment in the Burlingame cemetery. Mrs. Berry, as Miss Ada NELSON, is held in loving remembrance by many friends of former days. Brief burial services will be held in the cemetery on the afternoon of Decoration Day, at 2:30 o'clock. Mr. Berry will accompany the late Mrs. Berry's brother, Hayden Nelson, of Memphis, Tenn.
