    2. ANITA MCKINNEY
    3. Hi Deborah, I would like to confirm that the information I have is correct. Also, it would be helpful to have the spouses names for the children and siblings. The information is for a book about the people buried at the Arvonia cemetery which will be used by the Osage County Historical Society. Family lore and military service would also be helpful. Thanks for your help, Anita ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> ; [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 08, 2008 8:18 PM Subject: Re: [KSOSAGE] Clarence & Leta May (Standiferd) Holmquist What kind of information are you looking for? On 5-2-1859, he joined a Pikes Peak gold expedition. He had to pay his share of $40 and drive a team of oxen across the plains. When he arrived in Denver, he met up with some old friends. They convinced him that the gold expedition was a "humbug" so he turned around and went back home. His next trip took him to Emporia in August 1859 and then on to Burlingame where he worked on opening a coal drift for Joe Marple. After becoming ill, he quit and walked back to Leavenworth. An old friend happened along and convinced him to travel to St. Louis with him. After arriving in Lawrence, he sent his gold dust to the US Mint and he earned $6000. -While he was in Lawrence, he heard about the Welsh colony at Arvonia. While traveling through Osage and Lyon county, he thought about getting into the stock business. Once he arrived in Arvonia, he bought the supply store and eventually built a new store room across the street. He also kept the Post Office and had the only store in town for about a year. When Mary had finally had enough of his "sinning", 3 of her brothers paid Frank a visit and offered him money to leave town and threatened him not to come back. He left and was not seen for many years. Descendants of Mary's say that Frank contacted her later and asked her to come to Emporia to see him. She arrived at an apartment house or hotel that was located near the old depot with one of her younger sons with her. By this time, Frank was very ill with some unknown affliction and was in his bed. At the end of their visit, Frank pulled out a gun and killed himself. Mary and her son left the room and proceeded to their buggy. Outside the building, she saw an engineer from the depot and told him that her husband had just shot himself. She and her son then got into their buggy and proceeded to leave town. The Sheriff started looking for her, thinking that she had something to do with his death. Eventually, she was! cleared of any accusations. -1851-1861 Crickhowell Reg.
