The Carbondale Calender Thursday April 1, 1886 A horse with a single harness on came tearing down Main street Tuesday. It belonged to Wm. COFFMAN and had ran from Ridgeway. No damage done except the breaking of the buggy. E.E. THOMAS and family are comfortably housed in the Dr. Moore property. Ed, slipped out of the moving problem by going on his "run" but left Mr. La Fayette McDONALD and Col. BOWEN to manage the work.
The Carbondale Calender Thursday March 11, 1886 Mrs. Kate E. THOMAS is elected Grand Conductress of the Grand Lodge Eastern Star Chapter. Good for her and good for Carbondale. Mrs. Katie B. THOMAS, Worthy Matron and Mrs. Ella EAKIN. Conductress of Fidelity Chapter, Order Eastern Star, went to Newton Tuesday, to represent the home chapter at the Grand Lodge which is session at that place. (Note: Kate E. and Katie B. Thomas typed as printed in newspaper.)

The Carbondale Calender Osage County Thursday February 25, 1886 Last Saturday, Mrs. David GRIFFITH died, leaving a husband and seven small children. The funeral ceremonies were conducted by the Daughters of Rebecca, of which order she was a member. The lodges of Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias followed to the grave; also most of our citizens. Poor "Davy: has the sympathy of every one. (Scranton.)

Wives, have ready for your men clean, cool night garments. Farmers, when the day's work is over and you are ready to retire, wash your bodies thoroughly all over. Give yourself a good scrubbing in plenty of soap and water. The farmer who will go to bed with the dust and perspiration of the day still upon him is not fit to sleep in a bed. He is not in fact a civilized human being. No! Off with your fixings and take a good bath. Then you will smell as sweet and sleep as sound as a clean baby. You will rise in the morning feverless and in good temper, ready to do a solid day's work.

The Topeka Daily Capital Monday January 31, 1966 Ross Metzler Dies at 86. Carbondale.--Ross R. METZLER, 86, Carbondale, died Sunday at an Overbrook nursing home after a short illness. He was born Dec. 12, 1879, four miles east of Carbondale and spent all his life in the Carbondale community. He was a member of the Community Congregational Church at Carbondale. He was a farmer and stockman and was a member of several farmers' organizations. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Grace Fox Metzler, of the home; two sons, Dwight F. Metzler, Lawrence, and Hugh E. Metzler, Arkansas City; a sister, Mrs. Hope KAFF, Overbrook; and six grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Carbondale Community Congregational Church. Burial will be in Ridgeway Cemetery northeast of Carbondale. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carbondale Community Congregational Church. Baker Funeral Home at Overbrook is in charge of arrangements.
The Topeka Daily Capital Sunday January 30, 1966 Frank Hollis, 84, Of Overbrook Dies. Overbrook.--Frank HOLLIS, 84, Overbrook, died Saturday at a Lyndon nursing home. He was born in the Valley Brook community south of Overbrook, the son of James and Cecelia Hollis. he spent most of his life in the Valley Brook community. He was a retired farmer. He was a director of First National Bank at Overbrook more than 25 years and was a member of the Overbrook Farmers Union. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. John COOPER, Carbondale; and three brothers, William Hollis, Overbrook, John Hollis, Elk City, Okla., and Cecil Hollis, Eads, Colo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Overbrook Methodist Church. Burial will be in Valley Brook Cemetery about four miles south of Overbrook. Baker Funeral Home at Overbrook is in charge of arrangements.

It's interesting that their intended destination was Chicago, although in fact they landed at Castle Garden in New York City on 22 May 1872 and had made it to Osage County, KS, by September of that year. I now know that Herman Granat died there between 1880 and 1900, and his widow, Elise/Eliza, moved to Osage City after his death and was still alive by 1915, although she must have died by 1920. The Topeka Daily Capital Thursday January 27, 1966 Olive Ross. Harveyville.--Mrs. Olive ROSS, Harveyville, died Tuesday evening at her home after a long illness. She was 94. Mrs. Ross was born June 19, 1871, in Burlingame, where she lived most of her life. In 1951 she moved to Harveyville to live with her sister, Mrs. Mable WALTON. Her sister, survives her. Services will be at 2 p.m Friday at Carey Funeral Home, Burlingame, with burial in Burlingame Cemetery.
