Physicians are exerting every effort possible to restore health to Oscar HUNTER. Cancer of the liver has been pronounced as the cause of his illness. He has not been feeling well for the past two or three weeks and considered the matter in a mediocre way, but Saturday, his physical conditions was such that he was forced to go to bed. Since that time he has been in a very serious condition. ================= Same newspaper; August 27, 1925 Oscar SESTROM was born at Burlington, Iowa, March 30, 1866, and died at Melvern, Kansas, August 20, 1925, at the age of 56 years, 4 months, and 21 days. When 5 years of age his mother died and he was given a home with Mr. and Mrs. N.R. HUNTER of Burlington, Iowa. He was always a good, obedient son to them and since the death of Mr. Hunter has tenderly cared for his aged foster mother. He came to Melvern from Kansas City in 1913. He has won many friends here among the people with whom he was associated. He leaves to mourn his loss his foster mother, Mrs. N.R. Hunter, one brother and three sisters, Edward Ramsey, Mrs. Ida Thulin, Miss Clara Ballard, all of Melvern and Mrs. Alice Muser of Omaha, Nebraska, besides other relatives and a host of friends.

Mrs. William PLOWMAN had the misfortune to suffer a sprained ankle during the first day of the picnic. Mrs. Plowman was sitting on the end of a short board in front of the band stand and did not notice that those who were sitting on the other part of the same board were leaving. As soon as they vacated the weight of Mrs. Plowman's body was enough to raise the opposite end of the board on which she was sitting and she fell on her right ankle, causing a serious sprain.

    3. The Melvern Review Thursday November 12, 1925 Irene CRAWFORD and Nelle HOWE attended the teachers meeting in Emporia last week. They returned home Sunday morning. George WARNER visited with Elmer KALB last Wednesday. Mercedes DOOTY is our new apprentice. She began her work Monday evening.

    3. The Melvern Review Thursday October 8, 1925 Swanson--Jones. Miss Mabel SWANSON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Swanson of near Melvern, and Mr. Floyd JONES drove to Garnett, Thursday, September 24, and were quietly married by the Probate Judge of that place. Mr. Jones is a prominent young farmer of this locality, being a son of J.J. Jones of Melvern. After the wedding the young couple drove to Colony and Lone Elm where they spent several days visiting at the Harry Foster and M. H. Jones homes. Mrs. Jones will be remembered by a host of friends in Melvern, and especially by those of her old home who wish here and Floyd every happiness in their married life. The Review joins in extending congratulations.

    3. The Melvern Review Thursday September 3, 1925 To Spend Winter In Mexico. Mrs. Mary ALLISON has rented her city residence and at the present time is visiting at the N.C. Francis home in Emporia for a couple of weeks before going to Cananea, Sonoia, Old Mexico, to spend the Winter with her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Updike.

    3. The Melvern Review Thursday August 6, 1925 To Training Camp. Cleo RICE, Velda STEPHENS and Leeman TROUT left Friday morning to spend the month of August in the training camp at Ft. Leavenworth. The boys arrived at their destination Saturday and reported for duty. In a letter received here we learned that Leeman received the first initiation by being required to wash dishes. We are certain that Melvern will win the county championship in foot ball this fall when these hardy young men fall in the line of battle.

    3. The Melvern Review Thursday August 6, 1925 Gerald Allison Has Thyphoid. Gerald Allison has the walking tyhpoid. He returned from a vacation trip last week and contracted the ailment while on the trip. He expects to be out of bed in a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Joe ALLISON are visiting in Topeka. J.M. DOOTY and family have moved into Mrs. COLYAR's house. Arthur BOYER and family moved into the house vacated by the Dootys.

    3. The Melvin Review Thursday July 23, 1925 Narrowly Escapes Injury. Sim DOOTY narrowly escaped injury last Tuesday morning when he attempted to crank a Chevrolet touring car which was in gear at the time. When the motor started the car gave a sudden lunge forward and had Dooty been a little slower in his moving the car would have passed over him. After missing Dooty, the car plunged into a telephone pole. The radiator was slightly damaged and required some repairing. The car was owned by Mr. Carlson of Olivet.

    3. The Melvern Review Thursday July 23, 1925 Vacation In Colorado. Mr. and Mrs. M.D. WARNER and Mr. and Mrs. Roy MARKER started on their vacation through Colorado, New Mexico and other western states last Thursday morning. Mr. Warner has real estate in New Mexico and while on the trip will look after interests pertaining to the same. They plan to spend three weeks on the outing.

    3. The Melvern Review Thursday July 23, 1925 Dooty Enlarges Home. J.S. DOOTY is building two rooms onto his city property and also adding a porch. They are being built on the north side of the present structure and the porch will face east. Tile and brick will be used in construction.

    3. The Melvern Review Thursday July 2, 1925 Mr. and Mrs. George H. White Entertain. Mr. and Mrs. George H. White entertained a number of guests at a bounteous dinner, given at their country home in the Booth neighborhood, last Sunday. Ice cream was included among the many delicacies that adorned the dinner table. In the afternoon the guest drove to the Pleasant Valley farm of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Bailey and repelled the sweltering heat by taking a dip in the creek. Those who participated in the event were: Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Bancroft, Linn Michaels and family, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Bailey, Jim Michaels and family and Mr. and Mrs. George White.

M.D. WARNER and N.G. ELDER narrowly escaped a very dangerous wreck and probably serious injury, when they were driving east of town last week. On their way they met one of the "road hogs" that we hear so much about and who ought to be expelled from even being allowed to venture on the roads, who would not proceed to his side of the road when the two cars met. Consequently, Mr. Warner was forced to almost take the ditch, and had he done so, the aforementioned castatrophe, might have happened. At it was, N.G. Elder received a slight cut on his knee which was the only damage done.
