The Carbondale Independent Osage County Wednesday January 11, 1883 The first white female born in Kansas Territory died at Auburn, Shawnee county, on Tuesday last, aged 48 years. Her names was Elizabeth CARTER, wife of John CARTER. her father was Robert SIMERWELL, a noted Baptist missionary among the Chippawas and Pottawatomies, and came to this Territory with the former tribe when the were removed from Michigan.

The Carbondale Independent Wednesday January 4, 1883 Nellie HAMILTON will receive from the city of Osborne $470 for damages sustained in falling upon a defective sidewalk. The entire cost to the city will amount to $1,018.81. Our city may be treated to a similar hard pill some of these days if our people will still persist in ignoring the ordinances relating to our sidewalks.

The Carbondale Independent Osage County Wednesday January 4, 1883 We are informed that D.K. LORD, Jr., Quenemo, a brother of John W. Lord, of Scranton, is to be married on Monday next to Miss Cora GIBSON. Mr. Lord some nine years ago, went to Wyoming having but ten dollars in this pocket, and about a year ago he sold his business there for $10,000 in cash and came back to his first love, and purchased a farm of two hundred and forty acres, and also has built a house that cost 1,400 dollars. Surely he is deserving of a happy lot, and we hope he may have happiness for part of his stock in trade all the days of his life.
