Disclaimer: The present location of Lenora still has postal service, a bank, Rural Telephone Company and several other businesses. I'm NOT saying that Lenora is defunct - just talking about its beginnings! The first attempt at establishing a town was in Sept. 1873. A meeting was held in the log dugout of Mr. Sedoris (Sedaris) on the north bank of the Solomon River 2 miles west of the present city. A town company was formed and the log dugout christened Spring City. There are no official records to show that Spring City had a post office, although apparently an application was made. A reorganized town company again applied for a post office. The post office was established 24 June 1874 with Ole H. Peterson the first postmaster. While the location was in Sedoris' store at Spring City, the government named the office Lenora. Bitter arguments ensued, with natives insisting on retaining the name Spring City. In June of 1874 O. J. Burwell, G. W. Hood, G. N. Cheeseman, C. H. Lansing and G. S. Burroughs formed the first town company of the NEW city of Lenora. They contributed $5 each and sold shares to many others and built a store 30 x 40 feet. Mr. A. Hendricks put in a stock of merchandise and became Lenora's first merchant. The feud between the two towns continued, and the government abolished the post office on 11 November 1874. During the interval, mail was brought from the West Union post office in the southeastern part of the county. On 30 November 1874, the post office was re-established at the new town site with A. Hendricks as postmaster. Eventually the supporters of Spring City gave in and moved to the new town site in the summer of 1876, and Spring City and Lenora were united forever. The Missouri Pacific Railway Company extended its line from Logan to Lenora, and the completion was celebrated with the first passenger train which arrived in Lenora on 01 January 1882. The city of Lenora was originally platted in four additions by Cornelia Burwell (filed 28 June 1879), George W. Hood (filed 18 August 1879), C. H. Lansing (filed 13 September 1879) and L. A. Hendricks (filed 16 December 1880). The city is located at the corners of Sections 14, 15, 22 and 23 of Township 5 South, Range 24 West of Norton County. Lenora was incorporated as a city of the Third Class on 04 July 1887. Churches of Lenora include the Congregational Church, which began meeting in the winter of 1883 with Rev. Bonnet. The next summer the congregation built the first church building in Lenora. A new brick church was built about 1925. The Methodist Episcopal Church was first supplied by a Rev. Dalton from Kirwin nearly 60 miles east. The M. E. congregation worshipped in the Congregational Church building for two years before they built their own church in 1885. The First Christian Church was organized 05 May 1905. Lots were purchased 10 April 1906. The Church of God purchased lots and moved the old Congregational Church building to their lots in November 1926. They have had services since that date. There is a lot more Lenora history in the book "A Story of Lenora, Kansas, 1873-1974 by Virgil C. Dieterich. You could try ordering it via interlibrary loan if you wish to read more.
