First of all, you CANNOT be infected with a virus through a Rootsweb mailing list message. Most viruses are transmitted through attachments, and the Rootsweb server strips off all attachments before sending a message on to you. However, you CAN be infected when someone from the mailing list who has the virus sends an email directly to you (They don't do it intentionally - it's part of the virus infection). The most common viruses right now are BadTrans and SirCam. I have received at least 2 copies every day for the last week of the SirCam virus. You can [usually] recognize it by the double file extension, for example the attachment could be named "my_file.doc.exe" or "ardie_income.xls.pif". It takes a file from "My Documents", adds the virus info, and sends it to everyone in the infected computer's address book. It could choose a file with confidential information saved on the computer and send it to everyone. Here's what YOU need to do: NEVER, NEVER, NEVER open an attachment to an email, unless you know the person sending it, AND are expecting to receive an email with attachment. Then scan the attachment with your virus program before opening it. Have a virus program installed on your computer, and make sure you update it often (weekly is recommended). Have it set to scan incoming email. If you receive a virus in an attachment, immediately delete it from your inbox, then immediately empty the trash on your mail program. Educate yourself about viruses - I subscribe to a couple of newsletters from the virus software people, that warn about commonly encountered viruses and their behavior. Or if you don't want to subscribe to a newsletter, each company has their own virus "library" with information about the characteristics & fixes for each recognized virus.
