Kyd was small combination passenger-freight railway station on the Burlington Rail Road near the Norton/Phillips county line, 6 1/2 miles NE of Almena. A store was built by Robert Kyd in the early 'teens. John Pollard and Emmet Farrell were early managers of the store. Besides the store, Kyd consisted of scales, stockyards, and a freight building. Many people in the area shipped five gallon cream cans on the "Pollywog", a passenger-freight train that traveled from Republican City, NE to Oberlin, KS and back every day. An open air dance floor was constructed on the north side of the building in about 1926. The Ross family often provided music for the dances. Later, Roy Hartley owned the store until it closed in 1936. Other families living in the area were Longsine, Emery, Kelly, Engelhardt, Henry, Grunert, Bailey, Douglas. In the 1930's the Kyd News items written by Mrs. John Spencer Miller (Libby Blackford) were published in the weekly Almena Plaindealer.
