    3. HI Ken Yes there is a Herby and Clarence Norton Shaw in the book. There is a whole long paragraph about them. Clarence Norton Shaw was born at a place called Devises and was the first child born in Norton Co. That is the reason for his middle name. They are listed as going elsewhere both of them. If you would like more information or if you would like the book itself, it is for sale on Ebay or I purchased mine whene I found out my ancesters were in it from the NOrton Daily Telegram who sold it to me in 1976 for $9.95 plus plstage. I suspect it is a great deal higher by now. For more information email me provately and I can let you know what it says completely in a day or two. 3. No Dolphin or Searls in "Seventy Years in Norton County, Kansas" by D. N. Bowers "Having traced the first settlements made in two of the principal valleys in the county, we not turn our attention to the northwest. The Sappa valley comprises the northwest corner of the county. Very early in the history of this section of the county, settlers crossed over the high land and began the settlement of this fertile valley. The name Devizes is associated with the early history of the county. The first settlement near this point was made in December 1872, when Henry Zimmerman and Herbert Shaw, coming from the east setled on claims one mile west of where Devizes is not situated. "Seventy Years", p. 6,7 [Bowers cites his source as the Norton County Historical Edition, Oct. 1916.] "Our local poet, Mrs. D. M. Shaw, expresses the following beautiful sentiments as a tribute to the pioneers: Our Pioneers We speak about this land of freedom, Of America, land of the free; Who fought and died for this country of ours, To make it safe for Democracy. Our Pioneers! Who fought the desert step by step, Through weary days of strife, Who hewed the logs and laid the rails, Who drove the shining spikes. Our Pioneers! The breast-works of our nation are trembling today, We are threatened on every shore; Will we pause and parry, or face the fire, As our fathers did before? Our Pioneers!
