Hi everyone, I thought this old obit was kinda neat, so just decided to share it with you all. I'm not related. I have this theory that Grant Township was named for William Grant, but can't find any evidence to support that. Ardie DEATH OF WILLIAM GRANT Passed Away at His Home Near Logan, Aged 78 Years William Grant, one of the best known and early settlers of Norton county died last night at 1 o'clock at his home in the eastern part of the county, near Logan, aged 77 years and 11 months. Death was caused by the infirmities of old age supplemented by a paralytic stroke a year ago. The time of the funeral is not yet determined, though it will be conducted by Rv. J. M. Miller. The interment will be in the Logan cemetery. Mr. Smith [sic] had been for many years a member of the Methodist Church. William Grant was born at Smith's Falls, Canada, October 31, 1831. When he was 4 years of age his parents removed to New York; when 9 years old to Henry county, Illinois. In 1852 he went to California, remaining there until 1866, when he returned to Illinois. In 1873 he came with his wife and two sons to Norton county, remaining here till his death. He was married in 1869 with Miss Permelia Straight, who survives him. They were the parents of four children: Dwight W., John E., Letty and Lulu. Grant was a Norton man during the county seat fight. He was county commissioner from 1876-'81. While in California he was postmaster five years and internal revenue collector and unrolling [sic] officer during the war. He was postmaster at Cactus for seven years. He was trustee for three years in Lincoln and Grant townships. He was a Republican all his life till he joined the Populist movement. Norton Telegram, 06 Oct 1909, p. 3
