    1. [KSNORTON] Defunct Norton County towns - Long Branch

    3. Long Branch post office was established 26 Feb 1875 and discontinued 10 Feb 1882. Christ F. Bender was the first postmaster. It was located on the Long Branch Creek in the northwest part of the county, but I have so far been unable to pinpoint the exact location. Lockard in "The History of the Early Settlement of Norton County, Kansas" says Joseph Wray was postmaster from 1875 to 1880. According to Lockard, the Long Branch (Baptist) church was organized in 1878 at Joseph Wray's house, with Rev. F. D. Hakes ordained as minister. He also mentions a Methodist Church on Long Branch on a circuit with Norton, Dry Creek, Hillmon, and Lyle. Settlers on the Long Branch creek as mentioned in Lockard's book included: George W. Waters, Henry Knapp, Charles Hanson, George Free, John Smith, Christopher Bender, Spencer Sheak, Dr. Newton, Oscar Bass, Reason Oliver, Godfrey Byrus, Erastus Campbell, Henry LeBeau, William Jones, Frank Boyington, Charles Deal, Ranselier F. Hudsonpillar, Joseph A. Wray, George Clark Post, D. A. Blue. The Long Branch Cemetery is also called the Wray Cemetery and is located in the NW corner of Sec 28, Twp 1S, Range 25 W, Crystal Township. Identified burials there number less than 30. Also in the area is the Hillmon School, District #6, which was organized in 1873. Richard Lackey Hillmon came to Norton County in the 1870's. The Norcatur Centennial Book references the Long Branch School, District 26, which was located in the NW corner of the SE 1/4 of Sec 29, Twp 1S, Range 25 W on land deeded by Joseph Beattie. Records were missing until 1927. The building burned in Jan 1931, but was replaced. The last term of school was in 1946 with only 4 students. If you have more information about Long Branch, please share it with the list. This is located catty cornered across the county from where I grew up and is definitely not my area of expertise. Ardie
