"The new town is called Norcatur instead of Lookout." Norton Champion, 23 Jul 1885. It was established in the wake of the Burlington Northern Railroad, and called Lookout because it was built high on the "divide". Norcatur Post Office was established 30 Oct 1885 with Jonathan D. Riggs as first postmaster. A new post office building was dedicated on 13 Aug 1979. I don't know if Norcatur still has its post office - anyone out there know? There are two excellent histories of Norcatur. The 108-page "A Time to Remember...Norcatur, Kansas, 1976" edited by Ron Temple, Sharon Schulze and Karen Cozad and the 350+ page "Norcatur Centennial, 1886-1986" edited by Ron Temple and Sharol Schulze. Neither one is indexed, so finding information is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Here are just a few highlights: Norcatur is located on the Norton-Decatur county line and is so named, "Nor" for Norton and "catur" for Decatur. The first building in Norcatur was the Rockwell store, which was moved from Rockwell City when it was bypassed by the railroad. The first train came into Norcatur in September 1885. The depot was completed in May 1886, with Sam Young as first agent. Fires have impacted Norcatur many times through the years - twice in 1887, 1905, 13 April 1908. The town was incorporated in Oct. 1901. The first mayor was J. H. Rooney.
