Long Branch post office was established 26 Feb 1875 and discontinued 10 Feb 1882. Christ F. Bender was the first postmaster. It was located on the Long Branch Creek in the northwest part of the county, but I have so far been unable to pinpoint the exact location. Lockard in "The History of the Early Settlement of Norton County, Kansas" says Joseph Wray was postmaster from 1875 to 1880. According to Lockard, the Long Branch (Baptist) church was organized in 1878 at Joseph Wray's house, with Rev. F. D. Hakes ordained as minister. He also mentions a Methodist Church on Long Branch on a circuit with Norton, Dry Creek, Hillmon, and Lyle. Settlers on the Long Branch creek as mentioned in Lockard's book included: George W. Waters, Henry Knapp, Charles Hanson, George Free, John Smith, Christopher Bender, Spencer Sheak, Dr. Newton, Oscar Bass, Reason Oliver, Godfrey Byrus, Erastus Campbell, Henry LeBeau, William Jones, Frank Boyington, Charles Deal, Ranselier F. Hudsonpillar, Joseph A. Wray, George Clark Post, D. A. Blue. The Long Branch Cemetery is also called the Wray Cemetery and is located in the NW corner of Sec 28, Twp 1S, Range 25 W, Crystal Township. Identified burials there number less than 30. Also in the area is the Hillmon School, District #6, which was organized in 1873. Richard Lackey Hillmon came to Norton County in the 1870's. The Norcatur Centennial Book references the Long Branch School, District 26, which was located in the NW corner of the SE 1/4 of Sec 29, Twp 1S, Range 25 W on land deeded by Joseph Beattie. Records were missing until 1927. The building burned in Jan 1931, but was replaced. The last term of school was in 1946 with only 4 students. If you have more information about Long Branch, please share it with the list. This is located catty cornered across the county from where I grew up and is definitely not my area of expertise. Ardie
Leota (also found spelled Leoti) had a post office from 22 Oct 1874 to 17 Oct 1881. The first postmaster was John M. Cooper. The plat for the town was filed 05 June 1879 by I. N. Cope. Leota was called Weston first. It was located in the NE 1/4 of Sec. 18, Twp 3S, Range 23W, in the SW forty acres of the quarter section. This puts it in Orange Township. D. N. Bowers says that Isaac Newton Cope homesteaded this quarter in 1872 and started the town in 1873. "The History of the Early Settlement of Norton County, Kansas", by F. M. Lockard says that in July 1872, Cope build a log house with a shingled roof - the first log house in the county. The town was situated at the foot of a high bluff overlooking the valley. Before the county was settled, hunters and trappers kept a flag flying from the summit of the bluff to guide them. The first newspaper in the county, "The Western Locomotive" was established in Weston in 1875 by Nat L. Baker. Lockard says that Baker's opinion was purchasable, and it's price within reach of any impoverished town company, accounting for the paper's moves back and forth between rival towns. Others involved in establishing the town included M. A. Morrison, Dr. Green and Nora Weaver. When the post office was established, the postal dept. refused to call the office Weston, because that name was already used for another Kansas post office. So the town was called Leota, supposedly after Leota Morrison, daughter of M. Alexander Morrison. According to Lockard's "History of the Early Settlement of Norton County, Kansas", Morrison said he would give an oyster supper to the town company for the privilege of naming the town. Leota and Norton were the principal contestants in the county seat battle, which began in 1872 and dragged on until 1878, when the County Commissioners finally accepted the public square and court house at Norton. The loss finished the town of Leota, and the town site was officially vacated 03 July 1882. Some of the buildings were moved to Oronoque, when that town sprang up on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad about 1885. Today, if my map reading is accurate, it looks like the Leota townsite is covered by the Keith Sebelius Reservoir. The abandoned Leota cemetery on the bluff south of the lake contains very few identified graves, with the surnames Cope, Louk and Van Meter.
Recently I received a generous donation of box of Norton County obituaries, which I am slowly posting on the Norton County GenConnect Obituary Board. Tonight, I've finished the A's, B's, C's and D's and I'm working on the E's. You can check out what is posted so far on the Obit Board at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ks/NortonObits It is searchable by surname. I have included many related surnames from the obits which may NOT appear in the information actually posted. If you would like a copy of the full text of any obituary I've posted there, just send a request to the email address listed on the board. I can either scan the obit and send it as a jpg (picture) file via email or for photocopy and postage costs, I can make a photocopy and mail it. If you have Norton County obituaries, you are also more than welcome to post them on the Obituary Board. GENERALLY, materials published earlier than 1 January, 1923, are in the public domain, and may be posted exactly as printed. Materials published since 1 January 1923 ARE copyrighted, and to avoid infringing copyright law, an EXCERPT from the article may be posted. It is safe to assume that the bare FACTS, i.e., name, place of residence, date & place of death, date & place of birth, marriage date, person married, place of burial may be posted without any copyright infringement. It is also very helpful to include the publication name and date, if available. I hope you enjoy these obits as much as I have. Ardie Keep checking back as I will continue to post more as I have the time.
Disclaimer: The present location of Lenora still has postal service, a bank, Rural Telephone Company and several other businesses. I'm NOT saying that Lenora is defunct - just talking about its beginnings! The first attempt at establishing a town was in Sept. 1873. A meeting was held in the log dugout of Mr. Sedoris (Sedaris) on the north bank of the Solomon River 2 miles west of the present city. A town company was formed and the log dugout christened Spring City. There are no official records to show that Spring City had a post office, although apparently an application was made. A reorganized town company again applied for a post office. The post office was established 24 June 1874 with Ole H. Peterson the first postmaster. While the location was in Sedoris' store at Spring City, the government named the office Lenora. Bitter arguments ensued, with natives insisting on retaining the name Spring City. In June of 1874 O. J. Burwell, G. W. Hood, G. N. Cheeseman, C. H. Lansing and G. S. Burroughs formed the first town company of the NEW city of Lenora. They contributed $5 each and sold shares to many others and built a store 30 x 40 feet. Mr. A. Hendricks put in a stock of merchandise and became Lenora's first merchant. The feud between the two towns continued, and the government abolished the post office on 11 November 1874. During the interval, mail was brought from the West Union post office in the southeastern part of the county. On 30 November 1874, the post office was re-established at the new town site with A. Hendricks as postmaster. Eventually the supporters of Spring City gave in and moved to the new town site in the summer of 1876, and Spring City and Lenora were united forever. The Missouri Pacific Railway Company extended its line from Logan to Lenora, and the completion was celebrated with the first passenger train which arrived in Lenora on 01 January 1882. The city of Lenora was originally platted in four additions by Cornelia Burwell (filed 28 June 1879), George W. Hood (filed 18 August 1879), C. H. Lansing (filed 13 September 1879) and L. A. Hendricks (filed 16 December 1880). The city is located at the corners of Sections 14, 15, 22 and 23 of Township 5 South, Range 24 West of Norton County. Lenora was incorporated as a city of the Third Class on 04 July 1887. Churches of Lenora include the Congregational Church, which began meeting in the winter of 1883 with Rev. Bonnet. The next summer the congregation built the first church building in Lenora. A new brick church was built about 1925. The Methodist Episcopal Church was first supplied by a Rev. Dalton from Kirwin nearly 60 miles east. The M. E. congregation worshipped in the Congregational Church building for two years before they built their own church in 1885. The First Christian Church was organized 05 May 1905. Lots were purchased 10 April 1906. The Church of God purchased lots and moved the old Congregational Church building to their lots in November 1926. They have had services since that date. There is a lot more Lenora history in the book "A Story of Lenora, Kansas, 1873-1974 by Virgil C. Dieterich. You could try ordering it via interlibrary loan if you wish to read more.
Hi Lois, Do you have the info from the Almena Centennial book about the Henry Clay Taylor/Mary Agnes Noirfalise family; their son, Marvin & Inez Severns Taylor and Florence Courtain? They contain names and some locations of descendants. If not, please send me your mailing address and I will photocopy the pages for you. I would appreciate postage and photocopy costs by return mail. New information just discovered about the location of Dallas in Norton County According to an 1884 State of Kansas railroad map, Dallas was located about 5 miles east of Clayton near the south east corner of Clayton Township, Township 3 South Range 25 West. Lee post office was established 08 May 1876 and discontinued 06 Mar 1883. The first postmaster was Willis B. Dimmick (also spelled Demick). It was originally established in Phillips County and then moved into Norton county in the northeast part of the county, somewhere near the Isaac Whitaker place, on what was once known as the Charley Linnell place. The mail was carried on horse back from Republican City, Nebraska. One mail carrier was Nat VanWinkle. Info from "Kansas Post Offices" by Robert W. Baughman and "Seventy Years in Norton County, Kansas" by D. N. Bowers.

Kyd was small combination passenger-freight railway station on the Burlington Rail Road near the Norton/Phillips county line, 6 1/2 miles NE of Almena. A store was built by Robert Kyd in the early 'teens. John Pollard and Emmet Farrell were early managers of the store. Besides the store, Kyd consisted of scales, stockyards, and a freight building. Many people in the area shipped five gallon cream cans on the "Pollywog", a passenger-freight train that traveled from Republican City, NE to Oberlin, KS and back every day. An open air dance floor was constructed on the north side of the building in about 1926. The Ross family often provided music for the dances. Later, Roy Hartley owned the store until it closed in 1936. Other families living in the area were Longsine, Emery, Kelly, Engelhardt, Henry, Grunert, Bailey, Douglas. In the 1930's the Kyd News items written by Mrs. John Spencer Miller (Libby Blackford) were published in the weekly Almena Plaindealer. Information from "Treasure the Memories: Almena Centennial, 1893-1993" compiled by the Almena Centennial Committee.
