    1. Re: [KSNORTON] Seventy Years in NT County by D. N. Bowers
    2. Glenn Dunavan
    3. Thanks Ardie. There is a good write up in Norcatur book listing w.b. roe, f.h. roe( there are brothers) as part of a group who voted on the establishment of Rose Hill School. Others were Judges, 1 was John Hinkle(grandfather of w.e. roe and my ggrandfather) a voter was Lidia Henkle? have no more information on Hinkle/Henkle/Henkel families. I appreciate all you have done and are doing. for us. I have been sharing information with Staci when I get something new from Maryland. I think she sent me the Rose Hill School information. Have a happy graduation. I had half a dozen last year and it takes a lot of time( HS and College for children and grandchildren) Thanks Glenn.

    1. [KSNORTON] Seventy Years in NT County by D. N. Bowers
    2. Ardie & Greg Grimes
    3. > Do you have "70 years in Norton County" what areas does it cover. "Seventy Years in Norton County, Kansas" by D. N. Bowers ©1942 is a general history book about Norton County. It primarily contains historical information with bits and pieces of genealogical info, most of which occur in lists of people - for example the first settlers at [town] were [names] or [name] came to NT county in [year] and homesteaded east of [town]. Here are the chapter titles for those of you who are curious. Introduction Exploration and Settlement Organization of the county The County Seat, Norton City The Prairie Dog Valley - east of Norton The Prairie Dog Valley - west of Norton The Solomon Valley - east The Solomon Valley - west Long Branch and the Sappa Growth and Development Schools and Education Pioneer Tales and Times Concluding Words Appendix - County Officers 1872-1942 Glen - the chapter on schools includes info on the county school superintendent, establishment of the first county high school, then the other rural high schools, but little info on specific grade or elementary schools. Rose Hill is not included in the index of the Bowers book. There MAY be info about it in the Norcatur Centennial book, which is NOT indexed. Our daughter is graduating soon, and I'm busier than a one-armed paper hanger! If you would send me a reminder email after the 1st of June, I will scan through that book and see if anything about Rose Hill pops out. Ardie

    1. [KSNORTON] Re:70 years in Norton
    2. Glenn, Sorry to say I don't have the book. Several years ago I corresponded with a lady in Norton who sent me just a scattered bit of information from it, and a really bad copy of a photograph. As with all organized (?) genealogists, I have carefully filed it away with much other archival material. I was able to copy from the LDS microfiche a few of the pages, again many years ago when technology wasn't so advanced as today, and I was a real greenhorn at this genealogy addiction. The copy is so faint I can hardly read it, and it was reduced on top of it, making it one of the more frustrating really good finds. Ardie Grimes, Norton County Coordinator, does have the book, I believe, and she is a wonderfully generous and dedicated genealogist. In fact, she will no doubt be replying to your message faster than I can send this! I'll track down the scant information I have from the book, and post it here. Linda

    1. Re: [KSNORTON] cigar manufacturing in Norton
    2. Hi, Ardie I don't know who owned it, but it was next door to my ggrandmothers millinery shop. There is a photo of it in 70 years in Norton County. I have buried somewhere a really poor copy of the page it is on. Freida Gay's millinery shop, the cigar factory was on the corner. I don't know the owner, but Freida's father owned a cigar shop in Wichita about 1890. Freida and Emory Gay were in Norton and her shop, I believe, dated to 1894, perhaps a bit earlier. Thanks for giving me chance to see the box. Wonder if the needles were Great-grandma's? Linda

    3. Linda; Do you have "70 years in Norton County" what areas does it cover. Would you have time to share information? I attended Rose Hill school in Rockwell township. School established about 5 miles NE of Norcatur around 1889 on a NE corner of W.B. Roe's west 80 acres. Any information on families of the area is useful. Where was the Millenary shop? Thanks. 3. Hi, this is Ardie, list admin for the Norton County, Kansas mailing list and GenConnect bulletin boards. On other mailing lists that I subscribe to there have been a lot of messages lately with virus warnings both on the mailing lists and in personal responses to queries posted on bulletin boards. I just wanted to make it clear that warnings about viruses are not appropriate for this mailing list. This is a genealogy/history mailing list for Norton County, and therefore virus warnings should NOT be posted here. Please don't think I don't care about the spread of viruses. I worry as much, if not more, than most folks about viruses. But there are many other places to find virus info. If you would like more information about those sites, please contact me privately, off the list. My email addresses are agrimes@inetnebr.com or mad_genealogist@yahoo.com The sun is shining, spring is here - let's enjoy! Ardie

    3. These initials are often found on grave markers , these are "service" organizations. I found this in my old files, and thought it might be good to pass along. Most of these abbreviations are not familiar - the ones I've seen in Norton County include BPOE, FOE, GAR, IOOF, KC, K of C, KP, K of P, MWA, VFW, Masonic, Eastern Star and of course the American Legion marks all veterans graves on Memorial Day. 1. [KSNORTON] Mt. Pleasant Church
    2. Ardie & Greg Grimes
    3. Hello everyone, I'm trying to compile a comprehensive list of cemeteries in Norton County and I need some help. (1) One of my sources, "Abandoned and Semi-Active Cemeteries of Kansas", Vol II, ©1985 by Don Ford lists a Mt. Pleasant United Brethren in Christ Church Cemetery. The incomplete location he gives is SE corner, SE 1/4 Sec 33, but no township name or number. There is only one grave listed - a Bennett, Junie; and he notes that the church has been moved and made into a home. I'm just drawing a blank trying to find any reference to this church and I'm hoping that some of you can help me out. (2) The 1972 Norton County Atlas shows a cemetery near the SE corner of Section 9, Crystal Township. I think this may be the Railsback Cemetery, but I have never been there. Can anyone confirm/deny my theory? (3) Is the Norcatur cemetery in Rockwell Township or in Decatur County? Below is the list I've compiled so far - PLEASE let me know if I've missed any. Thanks, Ardie Cemetery - Township abandoned Button grave - Solomon abandoned Hellyer graves - Aldine Bieber - Emmett (at Calvert) Calvary - West Union Carlson Tellesen - Almena Clayton - in Decatur County Deal & Watton - Crystal Densmore - West Union Devizes - Rock Branch Edmond - Solomon Fairview - Almena Farmingdale - Almena Gettis - Noble Lenora East - Lenora Lenora South - Lenora Leota - Orange Long Branch or Wray - Crystal Lutheran Church Cemetery - Garfield Maple Grove - Rockwell Modell - Modell Mt. 1. [KSNORTON] Announcing New Norton County web site
    2. Ardie & Greg Grimes
    3. Hello list members, I'm proud and exhausted to announce a new and improved Norton County, Kansas web site. It includes most of the information posted at my old web site, but has LOTS of new and improved pages. You will find a listing and map of cemetery locations in the county; photos and history of the courthouse; a section on Devizes, including the cemetery listing by name; and a section on Densmore with the old info, but MANY new photos. Check it out at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ksnorton/ Please let me know if you find parts that won't load, errors, or any other problems, so I can fix those. I'd also like to hear what you think about the site and any ideas you may have for improving it. I have lots more pages to add, so check back every so often to see what's new. 3. Good Morning Paul, I've no idea if your Williams family were in Jefferson County, KS, but if so, you may want to check the Jefferson County, mail list archives. For several months now I have been reading many old newspapers from Jefferson county and posting to the mail list. Someone, I can't remember who has asked me check for the Williams name and I have done so and added notes from the newspaper to the list. I don't have my records in front of me or I could tell you who exactly that is who requested me to look for Williams. Anyway, I look for over a 100 surnames in that area alone for others so is may be of interest to take a peak at it. Right now I am posting from an early McLouth newspaper. Have a great day!!
