    1. [KSNORTON] Norton County Message Board
    2. Ardie & Greg Grimes
    3. *From Norton County, Kansas Board & List Admin* Many of you may already know that the GenConnect message boards on Rootsweb have merged with the message boards at Ancestry.com. One major change is that ALL the separate boards at GenConnect [queries, obits, Bible, bios, pension, wills, & deed] have all been combined into one comprehensive board. Several other categories/classifications have been added such as birth, cemetery, census, immigration, marriage, lookup, military, and we hope, church. While this process is continuing, things on the message boards may not always work as expected. There have been many reported bugs with searching and links on the pages may not always work. But please be patient with the changes. They are working as fast as they can to fix all of the things we have been complaining about. When all is functioning properly and you learn how to use the board, you will find many valuable features. If you have questions or problems, be sure to let me know, and I will try to help. The URL for the Norton County Board is below. Please be aware that you may not be able to just click on this link, if it continues on to the second line. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.norton Here's what you need to do: With your mouse, left click & hold and highlight the first line of the URL above. Then right click and from the pop-up menu, select "Copy". Now move to your browser. Highlight the URL of the browser page you are currently on- in MS Explorer, this is in the "Address" field. In Netscape Navigator, it is called "Location". Now right click again and select "Paste" This replaces the old URL with the new one. Now repeat the highlight, cut and paste process again for the second line of the URL. Now press the enter key and you should be at the board. I suggest you bookmark it for future use. You can search the boards without a log-in, but if you want to post a message or reply to a previous post you will need to log-in. If you have EVER used Ancestry, either as a paid subscriber or as a free trial, you will have a user name and password with them. If you remember a previous user name and password, that one should work. Otherwise, you will have to create a new user name and password. Make sure you write it down somewhere, as you will need it each time you want to post to the message boards. Another, perhaps easier way to get to the board is: Click here http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=main&r=rw You will see a gray rectangle with two entry boxes: Search all Message Boards or Find a Message Board Type Norton in the "Find a Message Board", click on go. On the next page click on "Boards > Localities > North America > United States > States > Kansas > Counties > Norton" You should be there. Good luck, and happy searching, Ardie Norton County, Kansas Board Admin mad_genealogist@yahoo.com

    3. Sharleen Do you know if Decatur County has included the Norcatur Cemetery or is it going in Norton County since Norctur is in Decatur County while the cemetery is in Norton county. Have a good 4th of July. Glenn

    3. Judy That would be a dream come true but neither of the counties have a disk or even a published book with cemetery listings. Decatur does have them on computer and the genealogy society is re-walking the cemeteries to update and correct errors. AND we can thank our list manager "superwoman" for working on a Norton website that will contain each cemetery and who is buried in each one. 3. Hi Charlene Thanks a lot. It is nice of you to offer to do these lookups. I have most of my direct descents from over here in the USA but germany is another thing. I do have birth places for ggrandfather Schesser and gggrandfather Guenther in Badan, Badan Grandmother Koehler born in Darmstadt Germany. I have the baptisimal certificate copy and the marriage licence of the parents of Socratese but I haven't gotten around to the actural records. I did some research on Kohlers in Darmstadt but that name is a lot like Smith here. By the way do you know where I could purchase the Norton Cemetaries disk or the Decatur Co either? Thanks for the information. Judy Sharleen Wurm wrote: > > Ardie > > Glad you got the Norton Cemetery listing. 2. Ardie & Greg Grimes
    3. I have no clue whatsoever about Stafford & Edwards counties. My best suggestion would be to try the Rootsweb boards for those counties. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties&maxrows=25&dir=next This is a two-line URL which will look like you can click on it, but it won't take you to the right place. Copy and paste the first line into your browsers location or address field, then copy and paste the second line, then search for the location. Ardie Glenn Dunavan wrote: > > Ardie. > > Gosh! 3. Ardie Glad you got the Norton Cemetery listing. That will be a big help to those needing lookups. Judy I took a copy of your message about your grandparents not being listed right to the library this afternoon in Norton. I was meeting Walta Russ there for some other cemetery listings. Just wanted to let you know that she immediately changed it on the directory at the library and was going to give it to someone so that it could be changed on the board there at the cemetery. If you are needing a lookup in Decatur County I do have some of the cemetery listings here at home or will be glad to go the muesum if that would help. We don't have anything out on the web to help with genealogy as of yet. Here is the website for the cemetery in Phillipsburg. http://skyways.lib.ks.us/towns/Phillipsburg/city/fairview.html Sharleen

    3. Hi Ardie. This is Judy here. I am curious about whether they got my grandparents, Socratese and Pauline Louise Gunther Schesser right or not. There are burried in Mount Olive. They had them listed as Roeders. I have talked to several people about changing it but have never gotten a reply about whether it was done or not. Would appreciate it if you could look them up and let me know. Also, is there one like that from PhillipsCounty or Decatur County? Thanks in advance for the reply. 3. Hello, everyone, I have a new toy that I thought I would share with you. I just received a copy of an index to the Norton Cemetery, canvassed in July 1980 by Elaine Schwartz. The only locations I know of that have this resource are the DAR library in Washington DC, and the Mormon Church library in Salt Lake City. Anyway, I will do lookups for your families in this index. Please send your request to mailto:mad_genealogist@yahoo.com with the subject Norton Cemetery Index. In the body of the message, please give me first and last name of the person you are looking for, and an approximate time frame. A good genealogical query will include as much as you know of the five basic items: WHO (complete name), WHAT (are you seeking?), WHEN (did these folks live?), WHERE (did these folks live?) and HOW (can we reach you?). 3. What a nice obituary I used to read the Harlan County newspapers my aunt subscribed to and the Obituaries were always so nice and quite long. Do they charge there now to put the obituaries in yourself. In lots of places you are charged. If it comes from the funeral home than there is no charge I understand. 2. Ardie & Greg Grimes
    3. Hi everyone, I thought this old obit was kinda neat, so just decided to share it with you all. I'm not related. I have this theory that Grant Township was named for William Grant, but can't find any evidence to support that. Ardie DEATH OF WILLIAM GRANT Passed Away at His Home Near Logan, Aged 78 Years William Grant, one of the best known and early settlers of Norton county died last night at 1 o'clock at his home in the eastern part of the county, near Logan, aged 77 years and 11 months. Death was caused by the infirmities of old age supplemented by a paralytic stroke a year ago. The time of the funeral is not yet determined, though it will be conducted by Rv. J. M. Miller. The interment will be in the Logan cemetery. Mr. Smith [sic] had been for many years a member of the Methodist Church. William Grant was born at Smith's Falls, Canada, October 31, 1831. When he was 4 years of age his parents removed to New York; when 9 years old to Henry county, Illinois. In 1852 he went to California, remaining there until 1866, when he returned to Illinois. In 1873 he came with his wife and two sons to Norton county, remaining here till his death. He was married in 1869 with Miss Permelia Straight, who survives him. They were the parents of four children: Dwight W., John E., Letty and Lulu. Grant was a Norton man during the county seat fight. He was county commissioner from 1876-'81. While in California he was postmaster five years and internal revenue collector and unrolling [sic] officer during the war. He was postmaster at Cactus for seven years. He was trustee for three years in Lincoln and Grant townships. He was a Republican all his life till he joined the Populist movement. Norton Telegram, 06 Oct 1909, p. 3

BILLINGS b: Abt. 1848 in Illinois m: 24 July 1863 in Tippecanoe Co., IN d: unknown Children: Herbert, Emma Parents of Ann were Carmi Jones and Mahala Dougherty Notes on Ann and Nathan Billings: Lockard History of Norton County, Kansas Page 15: Miss Anna or Nana Jones, a sister of Mrs. Billings and a half-sister to Oliver and W. B. Jones. February 1872 N. H. Billings came from Cloud County and built a dugout on Island, Norton. Page 79: "He (Billings) came to Leota and opened a law office in 1878, but only stayed there a short time. He lived in Ness county for a time. While there he and his wife separated, she afterward got a divorce. Some years after she was again married and now lives in McCook, Nebraska. The following story came from the book "Seventy Years in Norton County, Kansas" chapter titled "Pioneer Tales and Times." This book is located at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, IN. "THE PASSING OF N. H. BILLINGS The settlers of Norton County were uniformly persons of character, yet occasionally an undesirable was found. Among the latter class was N. H. Billings, a man so thoroughly out of harmony with the best interests of society as to become a menace to the community in and around Norton. His lack of character in the organization and as the first member of the legislature has been so thoroughly shown up in Senator Lockard's History that no further mention need be made here. The purpose of this incident is to give some of the unpublished story relating to the passing of Billings. Every settler of the county was a booster, the idea being to occupy the government lands as rapidly as possible. Billings was a "locater" and it was soon evident that many who put their land office business in his hands Were not only robbed of their entries, but the Money left with him appropriated to his own use. The settlers were indignant and a preliminary meeting was held in the store of Case & Williams to discuss the best method of dealing with the matter. A committee was appointed to gather all the facts obtainable and to meet on the following evening at Jim Kenyon's dugout north of town. At the hour appointed the dugout was filled with Settlers and the damaging reports read, showing conclusively that Billings was not giving the prospective settlers "a square deal." Some present advocated immediate violence, but the fact was plain that the relative of Billings' wife were highly respected settlers and for their sakes milder measures should be employed. It was finally decided to adjourn the meeting, repair at once to the home of Billings, order him to quit the county at once and for good. About the time a furious storm was gathering in the heavens, the play of lightning was incessant and drops were beginning to fall. The committee of information went to the door and called for Billings. His wife informed them that her husband had left the city and, almost at the same instant, a settler appeared and said that by the lightning's flash he had seen a man whom he thought to be Billings, coatless and hatless, headed south at a furious pace. Some one had evidently attended the meeting and being of a peaceful nature had hurried ahead and given the "Colonel" the tip. At any rate the fleeing fugitive must have been Billings for he was never more seen in this part of the country. J. H. Simmons, Topeka, Kansas January 19, 1914." Adina Dyer Tippecanoe Co., IN
