At the church a Christmas Tree was hung with many presents, which were distributed by Santa Claus. Meantime, at the Opera House, a crowd assembled and the dance began under favorable circumstances, but the pleasure was soon marred by the appearance of Joseph K. GIFFORD, somewhat drunken, but being of genteel appearance, he was admitted to the Hall, but soon became boisterous, and drawing a knife, made several attempts to cut the "boys," cutting a gash in a young man's coat some four inches in length, and cutting another young man through his coat vest, pants and into his pocket book, which alone saved the young man a painful wound; also making slight cuts on the clothing of other young men, all this resulting in Mr. GIFFORD receiving several licks on his person an! d his ejectment from the hall. He then started home, but meeting a nephew on the road, he returned and entering the Hall succeeded in getting more liquor to drink. Becoming troublesome, Capt. BERRY and H.A. BURRIS took him from the Hall, Sheriff BERRY going with him down stairs and out of the house, Mr. BURRIS following, and then Mr. GIFFORD called to BURRIS saying "come out here, I wish to talk to you." BURRIS going out (the Sheriff remained near the door) and they walked around behind the building. A pistol shot was heard immediately after, the Sheriff went around to where they were and found GIFFORD with his coat off and about twenty fee from BURRIS with a pint bottle of whisky in his hand asking BURRIS to take a drink, when BURRIS said "I don't want to drink with you for you have got a hole in you." GIFFORD said No, he had not, and then took a drink and passed the bottle to BURRIS who then knocked it out of his hand, and knocked GIFFORD down with his revolver. The Sherif! f then took BURRIS away, and returned to see after GIFFORD, who was found to have been shot in the left side of the abdomen, the ball having passed through the colon. Drs. LIGHT and DOBSON pronounced him fatally injured, and his folks were sent for, but two sisters failed to arrive until five minutes after his death, which occurred on Saturday, at 5 p.m. Mr. GIFFORD is an unmarried man, and by profession a marble-cutter at Greencastle, Ind., until he came here two years ago and engaged in farming. A Coroner's jury was empaneled Saturday night, which returned a verdict that GIFFORD came to his death from a pistol shot wilfully and feloniously inflicted by Hannibal A. BURRIS. Sunday morning, Coroner DUTTON issued his warrant, and MR. BURRIS was placed under arrest, and was allowed his liberty on giving bond for his appearance before the examining officer on Tuesday, the 28th. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Chanute Times December 16, 1880 Chanute, Neosho, Kansas United States Page 3 The Rev. The Coroner was notified, and a jury empaneled, who made a lengthy examination of witnesses. The evidence indicated that the infant was an illegitimate son of Kate KANALLA, and left where found about Nov. 28th. The mother disappeared the same day. The jury returned a sealed verdict by advice of the County Attorney. It is hoped that the full measure of law will be dealt out to all parties concerned in the inhuman transaction. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Chanute Times December 09, 1880 Chanute, Neosho, Kansas United States Page 3 We are sorry to learn that Mrs. IDE is seriously ill, and not expected to recover. ----------------------- Mr. Jacob LENT has been very sick, and his recovery doubtful, but he is some better now. ----------------------- Mr. Sam. WICKARD, of Fredonia, was in town to day. He is the happy father of a very young daughter. ----------------------- An old lady by the name of SNODGRASS, visiting at Mr. FREWERT's, was the subject of an almost fatal accident on last Saturday. She was in the store, and went to pass behind the counter, when she fell in the cellar, the door having been left unclosed. One of her lower limbs was broken in two places, and her body was fearfully bruised. Dr. BROWN, assisted by Dr. SWEANEY, adjusted the broken limb, and the patient is doing as well as could be expected, considering her age, she being 73 years old. ----------------------- On last Thursday evening a few of the young folks of the town indulged in a good time by going to Miss May NICHOLS' south of town and participating in a surprise party. Owing the darkness of the night, the unfamiliar road to travel, and the interest the boys manifested in discussing the good time coming, it seems there was great difficulty in finding the road. Although starting at the same time, they arrived at their destination at diverse times, a popular grocer being last on hand, arriving about two hours late. Inquiries were said to have been made that night at Earlton, Austin and Urbana as to the road to Miss NICHOLS', but after the crowd gathered there was a general good time indulged in, and at about eleven o'clock they did ample justice to the oysters &c., served in excellent manner. We understand a bank clerk is posting notices inquiring for a circular, and a railroad man was missing the next day. But upon the whole they had a good time long to be remembered. ----------------------- We received an invitation to attend the tenth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Sam. WINFIELD, at Chanute, on Thursday last, and exceedingly regret that other engagements prevented us from being present on that occasion. The cards were gotten up on tin, and were very neat and appropriate. Sam may you and your estimable wife live long and prosper, is our wish. - Journal. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Chanute Times December 02, 1880 Chanute, Neosho, Kansas United States Page 3 Mr. and Mrs. D.K. Sanctus! cried the angels, Sanctus! sang a little child, And the gates of Heaven opened, To admit him undefiled; Opened with a flood of glory, Where our baby stood and smiled. Safe within the gates of amber; Where they softly swing ajar, Lives our baby, pure and sinless. Heaven seems not so very far, Since our darling baby wandered Where the blessed angels are. Sanctus! Sanctus! through the twilight, Floats the burden of their strain, And although our hearts are heavy, With a wild tumultuous pain, We shall see the babe who loved us, When the gates swing out again.
