XVI, NO. 24 FRIDAY, JAN. 13, 1899 Obituary. Died at his home near Chanut, Kan., December 2, 1898, John A. Biggs. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Bayless at the F. B. church and were largely attended. Interment in the F. B. church cemetery. Father Biggs was born in the year 1827 in the state of New Jersey. He went with his parents to Ohio where he resided until manhood. He moved from there, to Kansas where he remained until his death. He leaves a wife and six grown children to morn his loss. Early in life he embraced the Savior as his guide. In him the church has lost a worthy member. He had not been able to attend church for several months on account of failing health. About two weeks before his death, to all members of his family and to others who were present at his bedside, he very earnestly gave this invitation: "I want you all to meet me in heaven.: He also said, "I am just waiting to cross over the river.: Yes we may say, " that he was simply waiting for his spirit to be freed from its earthly casket." The call came in the silent hours of the night; the transposition was made so peacefully and quietly without the utterance of a word. His work on earth was done. To those nearest and dearest to him a strong tie has been severed in their home, and light gone out to return no more. But in their bereavement they have the full assurance that he has entered the home of rest. To all the voice speaks loudly: "Be ye also ready for in an hour ye know not, the Son of man cometh."

Captain G. W. Johnston died at his home, 219 South Steuben avenue at 2 o’clock this afternoon. Service of comfort for the friends and loved ones will be held at the home by the Rev. H. G. Mathis, pastor of the Presbyterian church at 8 o’clock this evening. The family will leave on the midnight train for Pittsburg, Pa. Taking with them the body to be laid to rest in the family burying ground in Allegheny cemetery. Death was caused by a general breaking down due to age. It came after an illness which lasted for sev- eral months. George Wintermute Johnston was born September 8, 1832, at Brownsville, Pa. He spent his boyhood days in the schools there and completed his education, at Kenyon College, Gambier, O. He then returned to Brownsville and engaged in mercantile pursuits. A little later he was attracted to steamboating and rose from the position of clerk to captain and owner. He continued in this work on the Ohio and the Mississippi rivers for seventeen years and during the Civil war was several times called to carry United States troops down the river. In 1868 he moved with his family to Iowa near the City of Des Moines where he became a large land owner. Again, in 1884, with his family, he moved to Kansas and engaged in the banking business here. At one time he was the proprietor of the Chanute Bank, afterward merged into the Chanute National of which he was president. Some ten years ago he retired from active business life and has continued to make his home in this city. September 30, 1862 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Josephine Ewing, the daughter of Judge Wm. D. Ewing of Pittsburg, Pa. To this Union were born six children: John Oley of Baltimore, Md.; George Anson, Wm. Ewing, and Chestor F., all of Pittsburg, Pa.; Mrs. Mabel Bertha Camp of Chicago, and Mrs. Mary Johnton Pates, Whose sad death occurred in Monongahela, Pa., Feb. 15, 1907. Captain Johnston was christened in the Episcopal Church, professed his faith in Christ in 1892 and Joined the Presbyterian church of Chanute at that Time. Of this church he continued an unassuming But faithful member until his death.

I would love to have your info on Edward Deats as he is the grandson of Marshall and Chloe Brewster:! Thanks!! I already have the info on the other Brewsters from the source you mentioned (1902) but I am missing the Deats information. His (Edward's) mom and dad died in Indiana and thanks to a wonderful cousin I now have their death & cemetery info so it will be wonderful to learn more about their son. I found the KSHS site you mentioned this AM before I got your e-mail and they have two newspapers (Headlight and Thayer Independant News) from Thayer and more from the surrounding area for the period I am interested in.I also checked on the interlibrary loan and will follow up on that:) You mentioned that obituaries from this period are difficult-could you let me know the difficulties you have found? I am not sure who little Willie belongs to but I am beginning to think there may have been another Brewster (unrelated) family in the area as another very kind person e-mailed me info on some Brewsters whose names I did not recognize. Either that or it could be that Willie is a great grandchild of Marshall. I have the cemetery info on Sidney & Louisa's little fellas as I ordered the microfilm on Neosho Cemeteries. Do you have any insight as to why the mortality seems so high for infants/toddlers at that time? Was there any epidemics that you know of in the 1877-1893 year range? I also found that the 1885 KS State Agricultural Census is available for this area and should include at least a mention for one of the children, James Savage and maybe (if I am really lucky) Amy depending on the date of the census enumeration. I know from reading the 1895 agricultural census record for the family that it had fantastic info on the family:) Thank you again for your reply & kind offer-I will look forward to receiving your info on Edward Deats at your convenience. I am trying to compile info for the family to add with my photos of the family and Chetopa TWP at that time. B. Brewster

I appreciate your response. It is possible we are referring to two different Edward Brewsters (I believe there may have been other unrelated Brewsters in the area) or the census record for 1880 may have been incorrectly enumerated by the census taker (I have seen big mistakes on them before!). I have seen the census record you mentioned - it is in Chetopa where the family lived and they were there in 1880 but does not fit with other family records I have found. (another mystery to solve!) I have included a little more info on my family. Per the 1850,1860 census records of Harrison TWP, Bartholomew, IN and the Brewster Genealogy, Emma C Brewster Jones plus other records (MA, OH, IN, KS records of marriage, death, etc.) these are the children of Marshall Brewster (son of Jasper Brewster & Theodosia Lyman) & Chloe K. Smith (son of Stephen Smith & Clarissa Wheler) that I have and then below them the Edward Brewster family: 1. Clarissa Theodosia (died prior to the move to KS) Married Edward Henry Deats 2. Jasper W. Married Amanda J Keyser 3. Oscar Fitzallen (died in IN) Never married 4. Sidney L Married Louisa Curry 5. Edward Married Catherine "Kate" Savage 6.Samuel W. Married Hattie M Mills Marshall was born in Washington, MA - you should find his listing online. Chloe was born in Harpersfield, OH. From the KS State Census 1895 census microfilm (available through Family History Centers) these are the children of Edward Brewster (born 1851, IN) and Catherine Mary Savage (born 1856, MI) alive at that time: Marshall Junius Theodosia Allen * twin Anson *twin Dwight Chloe (Edward's mom was also living with the family at that time-I have old photos showing her at the homestead with her grandchildren and at a BIG Brewster reunion in Kansas). Another child was born in KS after the state census: Myrtle Margery The 1895 KS census, an agricultural one was awesome and gave me a full report on the family's livestock, crops, etc.The family also appears on AZ census records after their move there. (1900-1930) Are you a descendant of this family or do you have a connection with them? If so please let me know. I am currently in the process of doing a website that will contain lots of Brewster info and photos from the 1872 period on - including one of Edward's dad, Marshall). Thank you for your information -I will try to follow up with the newspapers you mentioned-I would love to solve this mystery and they sound very promising! B. Brewster
