Author: fernkopf Surnames: LOWRY Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.nemaha/471/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Booklets on the library shelves of the Jackson County Historical Society: "The Northwest Route", published in 1972 and "The Route of the Leavenworth, Kansas and Western Railroad, 1871 - 1935", published in 1980 by Leon Lowry. Not indexed. These informational booklets, complete with pictures, are helpful as an overview of the routes covered by these two railroads. Both railroads parted at Circleville, one going northwest, the other west. As in all research material, it's always good to check and verify additional sources. The Kansas City, Wyandotte, and Northwestern Railroad came into Jackson County at Denison, after leaving Valley Falls. From there, depots were at Birmingham, Holton, Circleville, and Ontario. The line left Kansas at Summerfield. As stated in Lowry's second book, the Leavenworth, Pawnee and Western Railroad was established after the signing of the treaty with the Delaware Indians in 1860. It was renamed the Kansas Central in 1871 and changed to the Leavenworth, Kansas and Western (LK&W) in 1897. It's route across Leavenworth and Jefferson counties brought it to Jackson county at Larkin [now Larkinburg]. It continued on to a siding at Bevard (two miles west of Larkin); another siding at Drake (four miles west of Bevard); Holton; Circleville; and Soldier. From there it entered Havensville in Pottawatomie county, continuing with stops across that county, Riley and Clay counties, ending at Miltonvale in Cloud county. Sheryl, thank you for responding. No, I am trying to find where she was buried. The Kansas History Center has vital records on microfilm for Nemaha Co., but they start in 1885. I copied the death records for 1892-1899 (mostly because they were darker and I thought would make more readable copies when I went to transcribe them). I hope to add more death records to the site in the coming weeks. The record you have, if you don't already know, is from the mortality index of the 1880 census. It gave her name as "A. L. There may have been Nemaha Co. records kept before 1885 but they don't seem to be at Topeka. If you can view film of the "Seneca Republican" for May 1880 it might have at least a mention of her death. Do you know where she is buried? Hello all-- I have created a new,* free,* website for researching Nemaha Co.: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ksnemahp/index.html It is part of the larger "Kansas History and Heritage Project" and Nemaha Co. is the newest online site. I have added census enumerations for 1875 Granada and Harrison townships, rosters for all G. A. R. posts in 1894, marriages for 1886 and 1887, township plat maps, immigration, school and church data, and more, all searchable. I just got back from Topeka and have more death and marriage records I will add in the future, as well as more census transcriptions. Please take a look around the website and let me know what you think. I will be happy to make spelling corrections, if notified--some of the marriage licenses spelled the same name two different ways! Do you have obits, family histories or photos you would like to share? I would like to add your family information to this site. You may also want to visit the state site: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kahhp/index.html At this time, I have only nine counties (out of 105!) with their own websites, but hope to have a home for all counties within two years. On the state site there is data for the "orphan" counties, where it can be searched until those counties all have homes of their own. My goal is to have data for all counties by the end of the summer. This project is for the state of Kansas, ONLY, and it is all free. Thanks, Sheryl

I've "rescued" a group of old photographs belonging to the CAROTHERS Family of Kansas. The first is a photograph of June CAROTHERS of Brown Co. KS which was taken at the Chase Studio in Hiawatha, KS. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with June appearing to be in her teens or 20's at the time it was taken. The second photograph is also one of June CAROTHERS which was taken at a studio in Hiawatha, KS. This photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's or early 1900's with June again appearing to be in her teens or 20's. The third photograph is identified as Stell CAROTHERS of Brown Co. KS and was taken at the Chase Studio in Hiawatha, KS as well. This photograph was likely taken in the early 1900's with Stell appearing to be in her teens or 20's at the time it was taken. There are no matches for a Charles SAMS marrying anyone with a name similar to Rosa/Lottie. However, there is an entry for Rosa S DENNIS marrying (or applying for a license to marry) Daniel E BLAKLELSY (that is how the last name appeared!)on September 15, 1893. I didn't find a Rosa BLAKESLEY (or any permutation of that name) or DENNIS or SAMS marrying anyone else in this index. Good luck with your search. Dennis. She was Born about 1876 in Kansas (perhaps Nemaha or Shawnee County). Her parents were Parran C. Dennis and Martha Elizabeth McGehee who were married in Shawnee County, KS. Parran was the son of Samuel Dennis born KY - lived in Nemaha County. Rosa married Charles Sams in Shawnee County around 1895. She had a child with surname Blakesley or Blakeley. She may have been married more than once. I am trying to locate names of her husbands and place of her death and burial. Thank you for your help.
