I did have most of that and I agree, unsourced trees are a problem but they can be a good starting point. I had called the county clerk's office and they don't have death records that early so I'm relying on the gravestones but they can be wrong too, especially when placed years after the death. The Nemaha Genealogy Society will hopefully have some info and I will try them this week. Thanks again for all your efforts on this. I appreciate it. Generally I don't rely on family trees for any info but death records weren't required in Kansas until 1911. There were some records before then but they were sparse. I don't know if the Nemaha County Genealogical Society Six & Nemaha Seneca, KS 66538 will look up an obit or not. But here's their contact info if you're interested in finding his obit but probably will be a death notice if anything. You might have to contact the Nemaha Circuit Court for his will/probate info if you really need/want his death date. I couldn't find Mary's married to John D. McCoy. The Gross family tree said they married 3 Dec 1875 in Nemaha. According to the Gross family tree, Mary died 10 March 1889 in Nemaha Co. Nemaha County newspapers are on microfilm at the Kansas Historical Society, www.kshs.org/newspaper/newspaper_reels/search/county:NM. You can decide which one you want to look at and contact your local public library to order the microfilm via inter-library loan. There is a Nemaha County web site, http://ks-nemaha.manatron.com/ElectedOfficials/CountyClerk/ which says that birth, marriage and death records 1885-1911 are available but they don't say who to contact. You might have to contact the Clerk of Nemaha Co. Court for will/probate and guardian records for each person who died. There just isn't any easy answer to find these early records. JOHN MCFALL was married to MARY MCCAW, often misspelled McCain or other ways. They were born in Ireland, went to Illinois for about five years, and arrived in Capiola with three children and had one more. Then John McFall died. Mary McCaw McFall then married JOHN MCCOY, also born Ireland. They had four children together. The mother of Mary McCaw McFall McCoy came with them. She was ESTHER MCCAW and I am almost certain she was my great-great-great grandmother. I would like to get a bit more info about this family to confirm that they are my family, as I believe. I have them in the US censuses of 1870 and 1880 and also the Kansas censuses of 1875 and 1885. Death records or obituaries would be a huge help. They are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery with dates on the gravestones but I don't know if those dates are accurate. Thank you. Fulton and forward. Here's a quote from one of Jenny Finney's letters: "...about my father bringing my brother Fred home to my mother. My mother's sister Alice already had 6 children when she gave birth to Fred at home. She was ill and weak after the birth. When Fred was four days old. my father went to Alice's house to visit her. He gathered up the baby and told her 'I'll take him home for Edna to take care of until you are feeling better.' Sounds OK so far, right? The only thing was that my father and mother never took him back. I don't think they never had any intention of doing so because I can remember how delighted I was that we got a new baby and can't recall any insecurity of thinking it was only a temporary arrangement. When i was born, my mother nearly died of uremic poisoning and was advised to never get pregnant again. So my father solved the problem of her wanting an! other baby by just going out and getting one. I was seven when Fred came to us. By the time Aunt Alice was well enough to want her baby returned, she was pregnant again with number 8, followed by a number 9 a couple of years later. When he came of age to do so legally, Fred had his surname changed to Fulton because he grew up using that name. I don't believe my parents ever actually adopted him, but they loved him as their own. Maybe that was out of sensitivity to his birth parents." Just let me know other info you might want. I'm not too swift with the computer, but I could mail things to you with your home address. I've "rescued" two old photographs belonging to the HARTER, WILLIAMS, and KAUFFMAN Families. The first is a photograph of Mary Catherine WILLIAMS HARTER with three children, Mabel, Nellie, and Basil and her sister in law Sarah HARTER KAUFFMAN and Sarah's daughter Susie KAUFFMAN. No location indicated on photograph, likely taken in the 1890's. The two women appear to be in their 30's or 40's and the children range from about 3 years to early teens. The second photograph is one of Mary Catherine WILLIAMS HARTER, wife of Leander Douglass HARTER with children Mabel and Basil. The photograph was taken at the Uhlman Studio in St. Joseph, Missouri. Likely taken in the 1880's, Mary appears to be in her 20's with Basil an infant and Mabel about 4 years old. In addition to their names, someone writes "two of the four children born to this couple, two additional children, Nellie Susan HARTER b. 3 Nov 1890 in Salina, KS and Noel David HARTER b. 1 Nov 1904 in Oklahoma Territory" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this family: Mary Catherine WILLIAMS was b. 7 Feb 1866 in Athens, MO, married Leander HARTER and died in OK in 1926. She is buried in the Fairlawn Cemetery in Oklahoma City, OK. Mary was living at 1722 W 29th Street in Oklahoma City at the time of her death. Leander Douglas HARTER was b. 22 Aug 1858 in Denver, IL to parents Joseph HARTER (b. 5 May 1809-d. 19 Sept 1887 in Oneida, KS) and Susanna DODD (b. 9 May 1815-d. 26 Apr 1893). Leander married Mary Catherine WILLIAMS. Leander died in 1938 in Oklahoma City, OK. Leander & Mary had 4 children including, Mable Williams; Basil Douglas; Nellie Susan; and Noel David HARTER, all born between 1886 and 1904. She was married to Lyman A. Davis Aug 28th 1864 in Banger, LaCross county, Wisconsin. They moved to Nemaha county, Kansas in 1866 and settled on a homestead a few miles northwest of Goff where they resided until about four years when they moved to Bancroft, Kansas. There were five children born unto Mr and Mrs Davis, those surviving are W E Davis, H G Davis, D E Davis and Mrs W D Calder all of Bancroft, Kansas. The husband died January 8, 1910. Mrs Davis has been a member of the Methodist church for about forty-five years and has lived a devoted Christian life. She has a host of friends who cherish her memory. There is something nearing the divine to have lived in a community so long and gather to such a host of true friends. The secret of this is that she herself was a true friend to all. The funeral services were conducted at the home of her son, H G Davis and the sermon preached by Rev Chas A Richard. The interment was in the Fairview cemetery north of Goff beside her husband. Davis was born at Florida, N.Y., September 6, 1839, died at his home in Bancroft, Kansas, January 8, 1910. Was married to Annie A. Hoyt at Bangor, Wis., August 26, 1864, to which union were five children born: viz. Wm. E. Davis of Ontario, KS., H.G. Davis and D.E. Davis of Goff, Mrs. Alice A. Calder of Bancroft and Effie, died in infancy. Beside the four children he is survived by the wife. Enlisting in the 3rd Wis. Cav. in 1862 he served one year when he was mustered out with honorable discharge at Leavenworth, Kansas. Emmigrating to Kansas at an early day he passed through and experienced all the vicissitudes of the pioneers of this section and his lot like that of most of his neighbors, in those days was anything but the most encouraging. However, with a persistency of purpose almost invariably among the most invaluable asset of the early settler, he won out and lived to see the country develop into one of prosperity and plenty, conditions to which he contributed a full share through the agency of honest toil and the spirit of good fellowship, and working to a common end, viz. advancement. Lon. Davis, a name by which he was familiarly known to all, was a man made of the stuff that makes a country. Always a whole souled jovial personage, he enjoyed the highest esteem and implicit confidence of a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Every fiber of his being seemed the embodiment of cheerfulness and this trail in his nature, no doubt had much to do with the way he lingered in his last illness. Death was the result of typhoid pneumonia fever with which he was taken ill early last fall. Only about a week ago he was moved overland from his former home in the Maple Shade neighborhood to the new home at Bancroft, which he had purchased not long since and where he and Mrs. Davis had expected to spend their declining years. The trip was made without him seeming any the worse for it. During Friday night his condition took a turn for the worse and death resulted early Saturday morning. Funeral was held in Bancroft, Sunday at 11 o'clock p.m. (sic) conducted by Rev. Clawson and was attended by the Goff I.O.O.F. lodge of which order he had long been a member. Burial was in Fairview cemetery Sunday afternoon according to the ritual of Odd fellowship. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Mary had died in Sabetha in 1912 a wealthy woman so perhaps William and or Clarence had inherited some money or land there. William returned to Ohio and died there in 1918. But Clarence is listed in the WW I draft registration in 1918 in Sabetha KS with his nearest relative as Millie McKee also in Sabetha. In the 1920 Census Clarence, 46, is again listed in Rock Creek, Nemaha Co. with wife Millie, 46, born in Canada. I have been unable to find a marriage or death record for either Clarence or Millie or any records after this 1920 Census. Does anyone have any suggestions of places that I might look further. I have trie! d ancestry, rootsweb, findagrave, USGENWEB archives. Thank you in advance. Nancy McKee Smith Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
